They were called The Stairs. Many a mouse had tried to advance all the way to the top of the stairs, but the same amount all failed. If one were to complete the trip up, it would show unrivaled athleticism, skill, and would result in unending fame. Marvin knew that he just had to do this. But then another question came to mind, how? Marvin was neither strong nor skillful in anything. He had no advantageous traits; he was basically set up to fail. While seeing many a mouse fail, he pondered how he would be able to complete the task before him. He watched how the other mice scratched and flailed against the steps of The Stairs, unsuccessfully even advancing to the next step. The furthest any mouse had ever traveled on The Stairs was a whole two steps; which was accomplished by his very own brother. After his fall, there was a whole celebration for him praising his strength and skill. It went on for days and even was to be named a holiday until some other mouse were to surpass it. Marvin became the talk of the town, wherever he went he was pushed around and laughed at. Even his own brothers and sisters partook in it. This carried on until the fateful day came. Marvin walked towards The Stairs and looked up. All the way up. He could not see past the third step, but he knew that this would be a difficult journey. With his first step, he heard the crowd of mice that had gathered around him whoop; they were waiting for him to fail. With each step came a whoop and with each whoop Marvin became less and less sure of himself. With his head held low, Marvin began his first attempt at climbing The Stairs. Looking back at the crowd, he ran full speed towards the fiberglass wall next to the first step and bounced back on the ground. Again and again he tried and again and again he failed. By his twelfth attempt, the crowd was roaring with laughter so loud that it was difficult to hear anything other than laughter. His next attempt ended the same way, him on the floor and every mouses’ laughter ringing in his ear.
