Masculinity Hypothesis
When it comes to crime, special consideration is given to those who we feel deserve it. For instance, when children and women commit a crime, they are given more leniency compared to men. We as a society tend to view men, women and children differently in various aspects of life such as intelligence, strength, ability, etc. Women and children have always been considered innocent individuals so we tend to be more forgiving and considerate. “This is known as the Chivalry Hypothesis, which states that much of female criminality is hidden because of the culture’s generally protective and benevolent attitude toward women” (Mindtap). Women are not being treated in the same manner as men when it comes to crime, which leads to less records of female …show more content…
A majority of males are aggressive and tend to show aggression, while women have been seen as more nurturing and caring. We are living a male-dominated society and a majority of Criminal Justice system consist of males. Males tend to be hard on other males because based on experience they know how males are. For example, I always tell my female friends to be careful of guys when alone and if she needs anything to let me know. The problem with this is that I’m telling her to be careful around guys when I myself am a guy. I as a male know how most guys are, however, there are some decent people out there but it only takes a few men to ruin it for everyone. I believe we do not view women as criminals because when people think of criminals they think of men. Additionally, as you stated in your response “Women are more likely to be victims and seen as victim instead of

There are gender differences in criminal behavior solely based up genetic makeup. Gottfedson and Hirschi’s theory provides two facts that make me believe that males are more criminogenic than females. First, as stated in the theory, females are less likely to commit crime because they have higher levels of self control. Second, parents tend to be more vigilant in monitoring girls than boys parents are likely to be more consistent in the application of parental management with girls than boys. Both of these factors I find to be extremely true, especially when dealing with self control. In general, males have more testosterone than females and are more likely to let their emotions get the best of them. When talking about crime I could see how…

A variety of evidence suggests that there is considerable overlap in the “causes” of male and female crime, and that both traditional and more recent theoretical perspectives can help explain both female offending patterns and gender differences for less serious crime. The explanation of serious female crime and of gender differences in serious crime is more problematic. The social backgrounds of female offenders tend to be quite similar to those of male offenders like male offenders; female offenders (especially the more serious ones) are typically of low socioeconomic status, poorly educated, under- or unemployed, and disproportionately from minority groups. The main difference in their social profile is the greater presence of dependent children among female offenders. Female levels of offending are lower than for males. These approaches are less enlightening when differences in female and male offending patterns. For example: Why are serious crimes against property and against persons so much less a feature of female offending? Male criminal participation in serious crime greatly exceeds female involvement,…

Official crime statistics show that males are four times more likely to commit crimes than females. Victim surveys show women to be more likely to be victims of sexual and violent assaults than males. It has also been suggested there are gender differences in punishments. And therefore different people have given their explanations for the reasoning behind this. The official crime statistics show that women commit less crime than men. Men are convicted of 80% of serious crimes, and women only make up about 5.7% of the prison population. There is also a difference in the types of crimes committed by men and women; most women are imprisoned for non-violent crimes such as theft or handling of stolen goods, which accounts for 57% of known female offenders in 2002…

The inclusion of a gendered perspective to the discipline of criminology raised many challenges in terms of understanding inequality, subordination and othering of those considered to be outside of social norms associated with the white, middle class heterosexual male ideal. One of the most salient challenges has been that of knowledge production derived from malestream perspectives. Gelsthorpe (1990) argues, that in order for criminological theory to address crime as a social phenomenon, it is necessary to deconstruct traditional knowledge production methods and methodologies in favour of a reconstructed criminology that operates inclusively of all, irrespective of gender, class or ethnicity (Gelsthorpe, 1990). Chesney Lind & Pasco (2003) claim that when classical criminology does consider female…

It may not come as a surprise to many that there exists a significant difference in the gender of perpetrators of violent crimes. For example, in tracking the perpetrators of homicide in the United States by gender and year, one can find that males outnumber females many times over, with over 15,000 more males than females committing homicide in the early 1990’s (Fox & Zawiz, 2004). While it seems concreted that males perpetrate more violent acts than females, the data still shows at least 1,000 females a year behind violence. The question that arises from these findings concerns the reason for such a large gap between genders, and what facilitates it. Two popular lenses than can be compared in examining the question lie in the studies of sociological and biological influences on men and women – more specifically what influences women to be so much less violent than men given the statistics. It is important to consider learning experiences, either through natural instincts or facilitated through social means, and the history of individuals among their families. One of the aforementioned lenses has a much larger impact on creating differences in violent dispositions amongst men and women, and there is a vast array of evidence from which to draw upon for support.…

In contemporary society women still commit less crimes than men but their impute to crime statistics therefore their crime committal has risen dramatically compared to where is was and steadily stayed for many years. Society and male sociologists have developed different theories and views over the years for coping with female criminal behaviour. In the 16th Century there was the demonic theory, the idea of women who commit crime or act in deviant ways as being ‘evil’ or ‘witches’ resulting in wide spread witch hunts and burnings at the steak. (Vito & Maahas, 2011). This can be seen in modern day society when female criminals are portrayed in the media. This theory links with the naturalist view of women by society; the idea that women are seen as natural care givers, mothers and nurturers and any other type of behaviour is ‘unnatural’ and feared by the greater society. Lombroso (1876) created the 'mad or bad' theory to categorise female crime, suggesting the reasoning and logic behind female deviance could only be explained as them being mentally unhinged or fundamentally bad natured and of an 'evil' disposition. This perception that women may be mad because they dared to go against their natural biological givens such as 'passivity' and a 'weakness of compliance' appears to originate from…

People always go as far as saying at time that what a man can do, a woman can do it and even better with solid examples attached to it like lady pilots in airplanes, ladies as presidents like in Argentina and the Philippines a year back.…

    Feminist Theory Of Crime

Previous to the emergence of feminist theories in the 1960’s and 70’s the criminal justice system and studies surrounding it were developed under the assumption that males were the predominate perpetrators and victims of crime- particularly in cases regarding interpersonal violence. Whilst this was and still is true, the number of women being involved in interpersonal crimes is increasing, causing a new wave of interest as to what circumstances a woman finds herself involved in a criminal situation; hence the emergence of feminist theory. Whilst this theory does not aim to dismiss the majority (males) in this form of crime, it acts to elevate the minority (females) so as they can be recognised by the criminal justice system and have their cases…

    Incarceration Vs Women

Once acknowledged, the question that emerges is why such disparities exist in the modern era of feminism and gender equality. Many sources argue that the prime reason for the evidently lesser sentences is the role of women is still very much invocative of maternal imagery. In a study from 1997, fifty-nine percent of women in federal prisons had minor-aged children (Covington and Bloom 8). This data, presented in a scholarly article written by two published PhDs, is further supported by a statement in a study created by the U.S Sentencing Commission, that argues “there is also reason for judges to believe that women are more instrumental in raising their children than their male counterparts” (129). The claim made by the Sentencing Commission, an agency of the United State’s judicial branch, solidifies the role that female stereotypes play in the nation’s society; if a woman is present in the home, her children are more likely to be functioning citizens in American society. Maternally invoked sympathy is believed to be a major component in the sentencing disparity that exists between men and women in the United States as women appeal to the sympathies of the prosecutor or judge in a unique-to-women way. In regards to the gender based incarceration discrepancies, the two genders should not be pitted against each other. There should not be a maternalistic or paternalistic lens on society and its function, instead, the judicial system needs to be solely based on the crime, not the…

In the United States having fake or papers that are no longer valid is just as good as having no papers at all. Without the proper documentation, you do not have access to things such as obtaining driver licenses, access to public health systems, proper housing, education, banks, and employment. There are some immigrants who forge identity documentation to obtain access to most of these basic benefits. Unfortunately, this is extremely risky and many do not take this chance in fear of being deported or being sent to immigration detention centers, where there you are stripped of your human rights and treated inhumanely. Life as an undocumented immigrant is very hard. They cannot legally work in the US, therefore not being able to provide for…

The study took samples of men and women arrested for domestic violence and compared and contrasted their percentages and severity of the crimes committed. “Using victim reported information and data collected by local criminal justice agencies, we found that female arrestees were significantly less likely than males to have histories that warrant concern regarding the potential for future violence.” (p. 69) This conclusion supports the numbers in the past that men are more likely to commit domestic violence than women, but also notes the increasing numbers of women committing crimes. “Finally, the present study adds a new direction to the continuing debate over the “equivalency of violence” between men and women. Specifically, researchers need to go beyond studying gender differences in the prevalence of intimate…

Even though men and women commit crime and are victims of the same, women tend to be more affected by this breed of coward men that like to establish their power and authority by abusing women. In recent years, we have seen as a country how the way people think is slowly evolving towards acceptance and female rights. Recently, gay and lesbians have been acknowledged in society, given that they were discriminated by the same society that today gives them a hand. Women are also more empowered than in prior years; today we see that our females are more in control of everything at work, at home, television, sports which was a male-dominant industry, even this year we had a female running for president named Hilary Clinton which goes to show us all that women are a growing powerhouse that is ready to take on important…
