Masque Monologue
How it All Began...
As I walk through the half abolished bleak, gray building my footsteps echo all around me removing the hope that I might ever encounter another survivor. My body begins to tremble as I look at my hand starting to twitch, tapping lightly against my leg, the seizures have been getting more frequent as they are, unfortunately, one of the side effects of the first stages of the plague. I see a flash of movement out of the corner of my eye and turn to the side suddenly. "Hello?” I call out in hopes of encountering another human being.
I hear faint, scratchy muttering and scurrying of some sort across the floor. And begin to feel on edge my hand goes to my back pocket where my switch blade is held, a prized possession of mine

A revolting stench is being emitted in waves from the mutated human. The sight in front of me is growling like some sort of beast foaming at the mouth and licking its lips. What ever hair is left on its head was hanging greasy and long, lined with blood. The face, permanently etched with a painful grimace. As the eyes of the creature roll up and down my body scrutinizing every detail, I felt exposed and cringed as all the muscles in my body tightened. His hunched back is crooked and skeleton-like. I feel my breath falter and eyes widen as I recall this creature being the last stage of the virus. I withdraw my switchblade from my pocket and the trembling comes to a halt as fear completely and utterly engulfs and overwhelms my …show more content…
Slowly I open my eyes but all I see is blurriness and my vision is really hazy… All I can see is the soft silhouette of a woman standing over me. Suddenly I feel a soft, pudgy, cool, finger press down between my eyes and I feel my eyes roll back into my skull...

Panting heavily I could finally see a building in the near distance. I ran five miles every other day so this shouldn't have been anything but the fact that I was in my work clothes and that I was pushing a four-hundred pound motorcycle my journey a lot more gruesome and tiring. But it took my about an hour which was about the time I thought it would have taken me to push my bike home and this was only supposed to be about three miles away, but, I was probably just tired because of the heat... As I got closer I was a sign that said - Welcome to Chicago! “What?” I breathed puzzled beyond comprehension…
I lived Edgewater and I thought I was heading West, Chicago is South of Edgewater… I think I have my cardinal directions mixed up… Nevertheless, as long as I got gas I would me happy I needed to get home as soon as possible, who knows how fast this disease

As I observed his ghastly shadow I saw that he was over 8 feet tall. He had huge claws so each on looked like a dagger itself, ripping and tearing at the flesh of my fellow companions. He had long horns that curled inwards like a rams horns. He had a long, scaly like tail that swung and whipped in the air followed by a flop on the ground in a joyless motion, as if it too, like the monster, was thrilled to taste the succulent human blood flowing over the tongue and trickling down the throat.…

Although this happened years ago, I must get it off my chest. I knew it. The second I heard mothers shriek on that Tuesday morning while reading a letter with tears running down her face, I knew what it meant. My first instinct was to give her a hug and not let go. I did not want young and innocent Sam and Rosa to hear her…

My father trotted up to the dart game, like he was a big shot. I requested if I could play at least once. He said “sure thing.” As I walked up to the stand with the dart already on the table, I thought I was ready to throw it at the rubbery balloon. I closed my dark brown eyes and squinted very tight at the only balloon I wanted.…

My body shoots up suddenly and vomit arises from throat. My head is pounding. It feels like it’s banging against the window of a moving bus. It’s an earthquake. I rush to the bathroom, chunks spewing out of my mouth as I run. I hear a creak. My mind registers another presence in the room. I am afraid. I slowly turn my head cautiously, my face frozen is fear, eyes widening as I take in the figure before me. "Beth" I whisper…

He’s-“ The creature yelled, and midsentence it just vanished. After that, I began to notice strange shapes coming into view in the distance, and I realized that I was now standing on what appeared to be the roof of a high-rise in the middle of an unfamiliar city. I looked over the edge of the building, and once again I couldn’t tell if there was any end. As I stood there trying to find my bearings, I was shaken from my thoughts by the sound of clanking metal. I turned to find the source of the noise, and saw a metal cage. In the middle of the cage sat a ragged looking man with manacles on his wrists and ankles chaining him to the floor of the cage. His clothes, if one could call those rags clothes, were tattered and torn. He appeared extremely malnourished, every curve of his ribs showing just beneath the skin. His hair was dark, and matted with filth, and his face was gaunt and sickly. In stark contrast to his appearance were his eyes. He looked close to death, but his bright emerald green eyes still seemed to be full of life, and they looked strangely familiar.…

“No!” I tried to scream, but was lost for words. A huge net plunged into our holding cell. Its bright blue appearance made my stomach twist in knots. Frederick screeched as the net dragged his desperate body into the airless wasteland above. The pale creature held his gasping body before my cage, mocking my pain. He was my only friend. I heard his screams ring out for a minute, and then everything went silent.…

I was so tired, even attempting to keep my eyes open was a struggle. My whole body was achy after a hard day’s of school work, constantly staring at a computer screen and typing away, just to finish an essay. My pale white hands, frozen by the air conditioning blasting on high, were holding on to the steering wheel like a person gripping the edge of a cliff, hoping not to fall into a dark abyss. My brain wanted to give in, to remain in the sleep that I kept dangerously drifting in and out of. I took a look outside, the road looking meek. The rows if brush hoars any objects spattered off the road by vehicles in the August sun. It felt like I was going around in a circle, my tires skating around the bends and turns of the road. I felt maybe I should slow down so I do not lose…
