Maths Essay
(a) How is math an integral part of our day to day life?

"In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them." -- Johann von Neumann

Math is an integral part in a human being’s day to day life. We often look upon math in disdain however, we use math at every moment of our life and it plays a vital role in our life. The procedure of applying mathematics starts as early as you are born because the first thing known about your life is your time and date of birth, so your life starts with maths as the time and date is all but the numerals of maths. In the morning when we wake up, we need alarms to get up which includes numerals, date and time. We need to see time in form of numbers, while the dates consist of counting of numbers as it changes everydayl. Math is almost in everything, for instance, at school children are given timetables which are in symbols of math. The number of books child needs to carry ,the periods are divided in durations of time which is again math. At home, the child has clothes, socks, shoes, and various other items used by him in his daily routine for which child keep a track by counting. Children have colors, pencils, erasers which are counted and part of our daily life. Many parents in today’s world have more than one child and they need to balance the items given to the children and this way the children learn to divide things equally which is again a concept of mathematics. While grocery shopping, vegetables and fruits are measured in weights which is again numeric form, then we require math as we use the concepts of subtraction and addition in giving the money to the shopkeeper and vise-verse. While cooking, the mothers prepare food for the children so they need to measure the ingredients in terms of teaspoon, tablespoon, ounces, grams, kilograms, etc. If you are preparing meals for many people, you will need to convert all the measurements accordingly. While climbing the stairs we count the number of stairs

In the graphs provided it is very obvious that the author in the second graph has lied. The graphs were exactly the same besides the fact that in the second graph the author added a break in the graph which completely skews the data. Instead of looking like a modest profit growth like the first graph it looks like a huge increase in profit because the whole graph is not shown. The scale on the first graph is bigger so it doesn't look like as big as a jump compared to the second graph.…

Developing mathematical thinking from an early age is extremely important in establishing students understanding of number concepts. Clements (2001, p271) concludes that children “are self-motivated to investigate patterns, shapes, measurement, the meaning of numbers, and how numbers work, but they need assistance to bring these ideas to an explicit level of awareness.” Children learn mathematical ways of thinking, such as counting, subitising and patterning from a young age. The absence of mathematical understanding and ways of thinking, restricts children from grasping the concepts and processes they are learning. Booker et al. (2010) says children who lack early mathematical thinking are unable to link ideas and instead are provided with the skills of obtaining answers in unrelated ways. Developing mathematical thinking from a young age provides a meaningful basis for children to make connections between the full range of mathematical concepts (Booker et al., 2010).…

This week we are doing two variable inequalities. The two variable inequalities are independent and dependent variables with graphing. I am going to work on the problem number 68 from page 539 from our book (Dugopolski, 2012). The problem is asking about the way to ship with the shipping restrictions. There is a graph that shows all of the possibilities of the number of refrigerators and the number of TVs that will fit on the 18-wheeler truck. First we need to write out the inequality to describe this region. Then answer two questions first one being will the truck hold 71 refrigerators and 118 TVs or will the truck hold 51 refrigerators and 176 TVs? The book shows a graphing points at (0,330) and (110,0).…

Math is a subject that involves the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations, abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generalizations (Merriam- Webster, 2013). Depending on the person, math can be an easy or challenging subject to conquer. Not everyone can solve math problems with little to no effort involved. Students are often given exams to test their knowledge of the subject. In Professor Hoffman’s Pre-Calculus class, we were given a test that covered sections 1.1-1.5 in our text book. There were a total of two parts to this test. Part one was the “no calculator test” and part two was the “calculator test”. On the “calculator test” I answered question number ten incorrectly. In this essay I will demonstrate how I corrected number ten so I can better understand what went wrong. I will also explain what went wrong during my thinking process during the test and how I came up with my solution.…
