Once a physician assistant gains acceptance into a residency program they embark on another six to twenty-four month journey pending on the program and chosen specialty. However, the length of most of these programs is around 12 months. The majority of residency programs provide a broad variety of didactic and clinical education. This is a key factor for those that choose the residency route in continuing education as a PA, as opposed to just attending medical conferences and other meetings that most physician assistants do once they are employed (Polansky, Garver, Wilson, Pugh, & Hilton, 2012). According to Ballweg et al., (2013), “residents estimated their total number of hours of didactic education associated with the residency program they attended to be 350.4 hours for…

The duties of medical assistants depend on the location and size of the practice and the practitioner's specialty. In small practices, medical assistants usually do many different kinds of tasks, handling both administrative and clinical duties and reporting directly to an office manager, physician, or other health practitioner. Those in large practices tend to specialize in a particular area, under the supervision of department administrators. “Administrative” medical assistants update and file patients' medical records, fill out insurance forms, and arrange for hospital admissions and laboratory services. They also perform tasks less specific to medical settings, such as answering telephones, greeting patients, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, and handling billing and bookkeeping.…
