While my focus is on the administrative side of things now, such as coding and filing claims, billing insurance carriers and patients, etc., I am quite willing to room patients, take vitals and case histories, call in prescriptions, verify insurance coverage, schedule appointments, fill out referrals, fax documents, and whatever else I am asked to do. A medical facility is a team, and teamwork makes the team work.
Cross training is vital because, like I mentioned before, people call in sick, take vacations, and leave jobs. In other words, life happens, and there will certainly be days when any one of us may be called upon to take up the slack in another’s absence. This can be a challenge, to be sure, especially if the duties being thrown your way are things you haven’t done in some time, or ever. But asking questions, especially the right ones, is something that is expected when you’re out of your element. But another thing that is expected of you, of me, of ALL of us, is to behave in a professional manner. Act like you’ve been there before, even if you haven’t. Never let them see you
