Surgeons: Life in Hands
One of the earliest surgeries ever recorded in history is believed to be one in the plastics domain, performed by a man named Sushruta in the year 600 B.C. (S Saraf, R Parihar). Today, more than 48 million surgeries are performed each year in the United States, according to the latest data from the National Center for Health Statistics (“Surgery Statistics”). There is an ample amount of work put into becoming and maintaining the occupation of a medical surgeon. In addition to surgery itself, surgeons must also meet individually with each patient for a consult on the upcoming surgery. It usually involves four years beyond undergraduate schooling. During medical school students must pass many exams to legally practice medicine in the United States. After passing the first and second examinations, those who proceed narrow down their medical specialities, submit applications for residency and are matched with programs throughout the country. Each of these specialties allows medical professionals to work in the field that they are most keen in as well as giving the patient to get the best treatment possible.
The specialty that does everything, general surgery. A general surgeon is someone who is trained to conduct a broad spectrum of surgical afflictions affecting almost every region of the human body. These surgeons have acquired the medical knowledge and technical skills in handling medical conditions that involve the breast, skin, soft tissues, abdominal wall, extremities, gastrointestinal, vascular, endocrine systems, head and the neck ("What are the surgical specialties?").
A specialty including the head and neck would also be neurological surgery. Surgeons in this medical field deal with diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of issues pertaining to the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems. During the course of an operation, the surgeon must make important decisions about the patient’s health, safety, and welfare. Additionally, the surgeon must work to ensure cooperation among the other members of the surgical team and make sure everything runs smoothly in the operating room. There are several settings a surgeon can work in: a private practice, academic medicine, institutional practice, hospitals, ambulatory surgery settings, and government service programs.
