Medicine Room Meeting Reflection
Look Back: This week for clinical we were in the hospital setting on the medicine floor. I was able to revaluate my clinical thinking along with my problem solving abilities throughout the experiences of my first day on the medicine floor.
Examine:
The experience I am reflecting upon in for this journal was when my partner and I were helping to transfer a patient to the bathroom. Upon first examination of the patient and with the information given by the daughter who was with patient we discovered that the client had fractured her hip but has been able to get up with little assistances the last few days. However once my partner and I tried to get the patient up we could tell she was having a lot of pain. I could tell the daughter was getting concerned because she had

They also discussed how many students found a decreased confidences in their abilities. (Koontz, Mallory, Burns, & Chapman, 2010). When comparing my experience to the one that the students from the article I can see a lot of similarities in the way I was feeling compared to how they felt. The feeling of any increased responsibility of not only being able to complete skills effectively and proficiently along with all of the extra medication information and background knowledge need can be quite overwhelming and from this article I know that it is not just me but most nursing students. In contrast to the decreased confidences the students felt, I feel like although I also felt a decrease in confidences at some points it also helped to boast my confidences when I was able to do thing

    Through my research for this paper I have found that RNs who have an associate degree or diploma are more likely to make errors during clinical practice. Nurses who hold Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees have a stronger foundation in which to build better communication, leadership, critical thinking and problem solving skills. The high demands placed on today's nurses really challenge all of these skills on a daily basis. Nurses with Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees have a better understanding of the importance to be proficient in these skills. In a study of RN-to-BSN degree graduates from 1995 to 1998 (Phillips, Palmer, Zimmerman, & Mayfield, 2002), these students demonstrated higher competency in nursing practice, communication, leadership, professional integration, and research/evaluation. The added classes enhances the student’s view for a wide scope of practice which will aid the nurse in comprehending the many issues that plague patients and impact health care. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree can help a nurse be more confident in his/her ability no matter the patient care setting. Numerous research studies have demonstrated that the ADN and BSN nurses are not different in skill competency when they graduate, but over time, the BSN nurses show greater critical thinking skills, better problem solving, and the development of clinical judgment.…

    The Nurse is defined by the University of North Carolina as "the leader in providing compassionate, quality care, focusing on the unique needs of patients and their families." It goes on to define the Nurse as someone who "collaborates with patients families and other health team members to plan and provide Nursing care that will achieve an optimal level of health and wellness, or when this is not possible, support the experience of loss and death." I completely agree with these statements. Deciding to take on the role of a Nurse shows the selflessness of the person. It is making the decision to put someone else before one’s self. It is the act of transforming from whatever type of person they are on the outside of the work place, and becoming someone who is non-judgmental, optimistic, positive, caring, empathetic and has the understanding ability to be able to provide care while respecting the patient’s wishes and beliefs. I feel as if certain characteristics of the Nurse are not taught. These are personality traits that we are born with and whether or not we utilize them, is up to us. Other Characteristics of the Nursing role, I feel are obtained by training and education. For example, inserting a Foley catheter, or any sterile procedure for this matter, training has to take place for the Nurse to properly insert the catheter. We have to be trained how to properly open the package, how to move so that sterility isn't broken and know proper techniques to insert the catheter. The Nurse must be trained on how to do this skill but unless she is educated, then the skill is useless. The Nurse is educate on rationales to each step, i.e.: Why am I doing this?, What am I looking for? What do I do If this happens? How will this affect the patient? Nursing is an incredibly interesting field with many doors of opportunity. It is a field that interests me…

    It wasn’t that long ago that I had those new graduate nurse’s hopeless feelings of fear and despair, as whether or not I was ever going to be a competent nurse.
