I initially presumed that taking medical history and performing physical assessment on standardized patients during simulation would be easy tasks to complete. I have been exposed to a similar simulation before and have first-hand experience and knowledge about history and physical assessment. I learned a great deal about my interaction with the standardized patients, which could reflect my connection with my real patients at work.
After watching all the simulation videos, I was surprisingly impressed that I knocked on every single door before entering the patient’s room and asked for permission to proceed. It was comforting to know that I highly respected my patient’s privacy and made it a priority in my list. Offering …show more content…
I was extremely uncomfortable addressing the patients, who were older than me, by their first names. In my culture, calling someone by his/her first name is considered impolite. It was also troublesome for me to look into my patient’s eyes while conversing because this gesture means disrespectful in my cultural background. I was not fully able to focus on my questions because I had to constantly remind myself to look into the eyes of the …show more content…
I think that sitting next to my patients demonstrates that I am available and ready to listen for them. I was creating an environment that made the patient at ease. I understand that it may be difficult to pull up a chair and sit next to my patients in the real world. As a nurse, I am bombarded with other important nursing tasks at work waiting to be completed in a timely manner.
The simulation offered clues and hints for me to focus on. For example, I needed to sharpen my communication skills by talking slowly, choosing my words appropriately, and speaking less formal. This is an important step to accomplish so I can make a sound conversation that based on courtesy and comfort. What I also liked about the simulation session wass that it gave me chance to practice on real people without the worry of making mistakes. The mistakes I made during the session provided insight about my current knowledge and expertise in the complex nursing and medical world.
To conclude, the simulation provided a safe learning experience for me and other students within a supervised environment. Patient simulation increases patient safety and minimizes medical errors. According to Kohn, Corrigan, & Donaldson (2000), simulation is a strategy to minimize errors by health care professionals in clinical
