Metaphors We Live By By Lakoff And Johnson

Metaphors, without even noticing, arise in our everyday conversations. Some even enhance our arguments and statements. As stated by Lakoff and Johnson, a “Metaphor is not just a matter of language, this is, of mere words. We shall argue that, on the contrary, human thought processes are largely metaphorical.” In these few short sentences, they explain how metaphors are more impactful than just words in our language, but they are a part of our natural human processes. I'll start by making the comparison between academic, and non-academic reading through metaphors, with the help of Lakoff and Johnson's analytical tools. In the first three chapters in “Metaphors We Live By”, Lakoff and Johnson describe how metaphors, in our culture, are used as “Arguments of War” rather than a “dance.” While at the same time, also touching on both how arguments follow patterns and the duo’s concept of “Highlighting and Hiding.”
This is implied in the sense that your time throughout the day has a price tag or value, despite the overlooked understanding that things, such as family, are more important. Academic reading is like moving to a new place. Using Lakoff and Johnson’s concept of “Highlighting and Hiding” to display how moving can put you out of your comfort zone and so can academic reading. However, it is hiding how this type of reading can expand our minds and make us better at reading and writing, exactly how moving can initially feel very burdensome and overwhelmed, but in the end, it can push you to try new things and also be productive to your personal growth.
