3. Allan Bakke was a 35-year-old white male who after serving in the Marine Corps in Vietnam and working as an engineer for NASA, developed an interest in medicine. Bakke applied to UC Davis and was rejected even though he had attained a GPA and MCAT grade above the school’s average. Along with excellent academic recognition, he also had very good credentials beyond the classroom and was even interviewed by UC Davis’s Dr. Theodore West who stated that Bakke was, “a…
I chose to apply to WVU SOM because of the university’s large social role and association with the state. I believe that I can contribute to WVU SOM’s communal ties to help foster change and improve healthcare on both a community scale and a state scale. I believe WVU will offer the opportunities to serve rural areas that lack access to health care, an issue I hope to also improve in my local community. I am interested in learning about the university’s and state’s plan to address underserved populations. Moreover, I believe WVU SOM’s program will provide me the tools to teach patients about their health. I believe transferring knowledge to the community will be the first step in encouraging and changing to healthy lifestyles.…
“You’re transferring schools, Karina!”, my mother exclaimed a week before my sophomore year. Ultimately, this was the last thing I wanted to hear. I kept trying to decipher whether the news was good or bad. Moving to a Medical Magnet school smelled like defeat, and I was not fond of change. Public school was my forte. I was adapted to crowded lunch rooms, lively classes, and having classes such as art, band, up to ROTC. I wasn’t aware of it at the time, but there was something hidden behind my personal chaos. Overall, this life-altering experience is what shaped me into the dedicated pupil and aspiring health care professional I am today.…
In this course project paper I will focus on Ross University which is comprised of a School of Medicine (RUSM) and a School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM). Though based in New Jersey, the University has campuses in St. Kitts (RUSVM), Dominica (RUSM) and the Bahamas(RUSM). In addition to these Caribbean locations, Ross University has clinical rotation sites and affiliations with teaching hospitals throughout the United States. Ross University is a very well-known institution both in the United States and internationally. It has been in operation for over 30 years, and was purchased by DeVry Inc. several years ago. The school is viewed by many to be among the top Caribbean Medical and Veterinary schools, producing more physicians and veterinarians than many US educational institutions. In addition to simply graduating large numbers, the University’s alumni have high ranks in statistics such as national placement exams, board certifications, and incredibly low loan default (0.0% for RUSVM and less than 1% for RUSM). Over the past few years, Ross University has seen tremendous growth, and continues to see change every day. I began working at Ross University in 2007 as the first director of alumni relations for the University, as an example of this growth I am now the director of institutional advancement and alumni relations for DeVry Medical International which encompasses both Ross schools as well as another Caribbean medical school. While Ross University is now a part of DeVry Medical International this paper will focus on Ross only as the third institution is still being integrated and their benefits are not yet in line with those of Ross University.…
Creighton University maintains a unique instructional philosophy that values students as individuals. With case-based small-group sessions and grading on a honors/satisfactory/unsatisfactory system, Creighton University exercises sincere interest in and support for its medical students. This fosters cooperation and collaboration amongst students, creating a friendly atmosphere in which students strive and encourage one another to become the best physicians possible.…
I am confident that acceptance in this program will help me to nurture my dedication towards satisfying my patients' quality of life. Acknowledging that medical school will be difficult and an arduous learning process, I anticipate the opportunity to utilize my intrinsic traits of selflessness, curiosity, and being thorough in order to emerge victorious. If accepted, I am confident that the guidance, teaching, and training I receive will enable me to continue contributing towards the medical profession. It will also enable me to achieve my ultimate dream of becoming an exceptional medical…
A significant reason I continued cheerleading in college was my desire for a team environment and support system of upperclassmen to look up to and underclassmen to provide a fresh look. Feinberg’s team-based care model is most conducive to the type of environment off which I have thrived my entire life. Moreover, as many of my endeavors have been inspired by the mentorships of my coaches and principle investigator, I look forward to building a similar enriching relationship with a long-term mentor in medical school. Furthermore, longitudinal aspects of FSM’s Health and Society portion stand out as they focus on the very components that drive my passion for the field. Through my personal spiritual journey, exercise hobbies, and experience mentoring…
When considering my attributes as a medical school applicant, I am convinced that I would be a great fit for the Creighton University School of Medicine community. As mentioned in my previous response, I am from a Christian background and intend to continually pursue my relationship with God throughout my years in medical school. Seeing as though Creighton is founded in a religious tradition, my belief in God makes me an excellent example for the reinforcement of the Catholic tradition. My heart has been set on the pursual of good and helping others since a very young age which has led me to a career in medicine, a character trait that fits in well with Creighton University’s endeavor to improve the human condition. As well as my religious background and heart to serve others, I place a lot of emphasis on self-discipline and strive for excellence in all aspects of my life.…
Experience is the truth. Seeing the eclipse with your own eyes is totally different from hearing about it. To Dillard, that event is much more compelling as she witnessed it herself: “What you see in an eclipse is entirely different from what you know” (Dillard 6). Dillard has heard about the total eclipse and has seen a partial eclipse before, but not a total one. The total eclipse changes Dillard drastically as it allows her to change her viewpoints on human life and the place of humans in the universe. She realizes life is immeasurable. Dillard draws the attention to the audience about the natural world. After viewing the total eclipse, she understands that experience is over theories. She conveys the idea to the audience of opening your…
The journey to medical school has by no means been an effortless one. Choosing the non-traditional route to complete my studies has not only equipped me with the maturity necessary to excel in medical school, but also the knowledge required to overcome the challenges I may encounter during my journey. Upon completing my undergraduate studies at FSU, I subsequently went on to complete additional post baccalaureate science courses at both Miami Dade College and Florida International University. Also, I have recently completed my Masters degree in Biomedical Science at Barry University. During my undergraduate and graduate years, I maintained full time employment, which has taught me the art of time management; a trait I believe will be essential to my success while in…
My goals for residency are simple – to continuously learn in order to educate and heal. Although I have been involved in the community in various ways for many years, I am truly excited to start giving back to society from a different perspective – that of a physician, of a person’s first stop in their most vulnerable of times. Family Medicine is a broad field that will challenge me in many ways, but I am ready to enhance my knowledge in a program that fosters learning through a supportive, team approach where patients and their futures are the greatest concerns.…
My clinical experiences, extracurricular activities, and working hard during my years in college to attain an excellent grade point average reflects my passion and abilities to succeed in medical school. As well as the skills that I acquired during the past years will help me improve and excel in the medical…
Going into my freshman year of college at The College of Charleston, I was unsure how the college experience would affect the next four years of my life; however, after nearly two semesters of coursework, career exploration, playing division one baseball, and being involved in the community, I have decided that the Honors College is the best path for me. I have set my mind on majoring in Biology and pursuing a career as a physician. The interdisciplinary studies, Honors Immersed, and the community involvement through Honors Engaged the Honors College offers directly line up with what I want to pursue outside of the classroom with regards to medicine and exploration into the sciences. These aspects of the Honors College will not only put me closer to achieving my goal of getting into Medical School, but I know I will enjoy them, as I have a passion for learning and helping others.…
Never would I have expected one of my first experiences in class at Miami Dade College to have excited me as much as this class has so far. One of the reasons I feel so ecstatic to begin this class is the loving vibe that the class throws off. This class isn’t just a class you go to, do your work, and go about your day outside of the class walls, it is a class that is intentional. You cannot leave this class without it impacting your life in some beautiful way. This class excites me because we will be participating in the WOW Center. Contrary to usual class regimen, I will be teaching others, while teaching myself. This class is here to expand our minds, and not just to assign busy work. Through serving at the WOW Center, we will be learning…
Her never ending support & guidance drove me to be academically focused my entire life. During high school, I was in a veterinary science program where I had my first form of medical training. Determined to graduate on time with a biology degree, I took courses over the summer every year. I personally visited UB and CCNM to explore ND school options. Upon learning what the naturopathic curriculum entails, I chose to take elective courses that would increase my success as a naturopathic medical student. I expanded my knowledge on NM elsewhere at the “Florida School of Holistic Living” & “The Center for Natural & Integrative Medicine”. I was also given the valuable experience of shadowing an acupuncturist. Her hands on instruction & advice will stay with me throughout naturopathic medical school & beyond. While I acknowledge the intensity & rigor naturopathic medical school may ensue, I am extremely driven, motivated & prepared to work at my highest potential in order to complete the program & become a naturopathic…
