Midwifery Personal Statement
For me, there is no other role that is more honourable, satisfying and rewarding than the role of a midwife. Midwifery entails everything that I love and is a role which I feel and believe I was made for. I aspire to have the joy of being an advocate for women, supporting, enabling and empowering them during one of the most incredible periods in life. I believe that midwifery is more than a job or career choice, instead it is a privilege and a vocation. I am very interested in the programme ‘One Born Every Minute’, I feel that this has helped me to develop a deep understanding of the role of a midwife aswell as the requirements and responsibilities the come with it; I will forever have a full commitment to a future in midwifery.

I demonstrated my organisation and listening skills when planning events to help raise funds for the care of the service users, while working with others members of staff to stay dedicated and focused on my role. This provided me with the transferrable skills and attributes such as patience, organisation and compassion which will support working in a healthcare setting. During the summer holidays in 2016 I found work experience at Southwark Council which needed me to find different work experience locations and administer them to different schools and locations, I had to make several phone calls which also helped me to overcome my social anxiety. During the Summer during 2017 I was offered a six week internship at Travelodge which helped me to become more organised and also allowed me to become conscious of the way I carry myself when I am around customers, having that internship has me to always put my best side forward and also work hard so that I can reach my full potential and leave a positive impact. The issue that my team tackled was homelessness in the borough of Hackney. I also participated in the Duke of Edinburgh, which lead to me receiving a bronze award, this programme permitted me to be continuously resilient and to also look for means to press on when I am not in my comfort zone. Currently I am organising a mental health awareness day which will raise awareness about and remove the stigma around issues such as depression, suicide and also looking at the benefits of being a highly sensitive person (HSP) within my church and also my community. In order for the day to be successful and to also be a good leader I need to be a positive example and role model for those who are helping me to organise the day, I need to be continuously empathetic, honest and supportive as the topics spoken about on the day are very

Due to my willingness to confront injustice and take action, others describe me as a confident leader. For the past two years I have seen the emotional struggle that hundreds of families have faced through my work at the Ronald McDonald House. Because of this, I have dedicated my time to preparing and serving them dinner on a monthly basis. While working at the House, my peers noticed my willingness to do any task that needed to be done because I was confident in my ability to learn something new, no matter how difficult it may be. Because of this, I was chosen to be the co-leader of the project. It is easy to say that my confidence has given me the ability to support the causes I believe in through both service and…

Laurel Thatcher Ulrich book A Midwife’s Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard, Based on Her Diary, 1785-1812 is a book that shows reader a different side of history that most have never seen before. Laurel Thatcher Ulrich wrote the book based on the diary Martha Ballard kept from 1785 through 1812. Although there are several documents that exist today showing the history of families and how they lived in the late 1700’s, few documents show their private lives and even fewer from the point from the midwives. For this reason, Laurel Ulrich wanted to write a book about Martha Ballard’s diary and wanted to embrace the midwifes role in the household by showing the reader the wide range of skills and tasks that each wife carry’s on to support the family. Not only was the midwifes role to cook, clean, and raise the children but to also manage the garden, health, and livestock for the family. Although Laurel Ulrich was unable to include all of the passages in the diary, she did transcribe ten of the longest passages…

My knowledge, development, skills and understanding has made a difference to the staff in my placement because my experiences have crafted me to become nearly as proficient as a health care professional which may have given an opportunity to the employees that there is an extra hand available. With the knowledge I have been able to pick up from college, I used this in practice which made a difference by maintaining team work with the other staff members and working more efficiently seeing as there are more people to look after the individuals. Using my skills such as being organised and having time-management, I was also able to assist the staff with paper work and arrange specific things for the individuals and this resulted in them having less work or being less stressed than they could have been with more time to focus on other things in order to provide for the service users. My understanding through how much I have developed also made a difference because they did not have to explain certain things to me again; I already knew what to do from my previous experiences which showed that I am conversant and skilled.…

Nursing is a very challenging and interesting career which involves hard work and commitment. Since I started studying Health and Social Care, my interest in Nursing has grown. This has inspired me to study Child Nursing as I believe that my studies can be practically applied. I am also keen to make a difference to people’s lives, whether caring for children or supporting parents. My interest in and appreciation for this career has been encouraged by family members who work in the NHS, and who have made me aware of its less glamorous side, as well as the positivity of caring for others.…

    Becoming A Midwife

Dancing for the past 8 years, and assisting its teaching has taught me to have an observant eye, and how to adapt my explanations to each individual, which will be very useful as a midwife in order to promote health and possibilities for maternity care. I have also volunteered, for 3 months, in a local care home, and it was a truly amazing experience, as it taught me how to work with vulnerable people from many different backgrounds. The elderly are very chatty, so it really helped me with my listening skills, which I’ve been told by a current midwife, is a key characteristic in order to be able to connect with the women and to be able to spot any deference from ‘normal’. . I love working with people from all kinds of background and being able to make sure that they all get the best care possible despite, or because of their circumstances. Furthermore, slightly self-indulgently, I’ve always loved caring for and helping others, and knowing that I made someone’s day a bit bearable is a privilege to me. Working as part of an event catering team has taught me that I work well under pressure, and how to adapt my approach to others who may react much more differently to being under pressure. I believe this will be very useful for me as a midwife especially in the intrapartum and postpartum sides, as the mothers and their families are under pressure in becoming parent, or in a more unfortunate turn of events, not becoming a parent, and interacting with so many different people, they’re all going to react…

If Epicurus were alive today I believe he would be wise to advocate his four-part cure for anxiety. I will address how some of his points may seem harder to adhere to today, but how they are nonetheless helpful and still widely used to help cope with anxiety. Every person is a reflection of their time. However, if born today I believe Epicurus’s four-part cure would at its core still be the same and hold great merit.…
