Mighty Rams Honor Society Analysis
Being raised from the Delta, I had/have to overcome many obstacles. My biggest barrier is being successful after high school because of the circumstances I face living in Indianola, MS. It may be a hitch, but it is not impossible to overcome it. Everyday I strive to not fall under the stereotype that if black people are given something difficult, then they want do it. I have a 3.4 GPA, I am a founding member of the Mighty Rams Honor Society. The MRHS is designed to honor, challenge and develop those students who have shown a commitment to the advancement of the school`s mission and vision for themselves and their classmates. I am honored to be apart of that organization. It is my greatest achievement yet. I am also a member of the National Tech Honor Society. …show more content…
I am pleased about being a member of that organization as well. Despite the downfalls I face here in the Delta and in my community, I still strive for excellence. I believe, as well as my peers, that Gentry High School was designed to minimize black kid`s potential. The …show more content…
While switching to classes, there will be tons of kids just standing in the courtyard playing and joking around. Other kids will be walking to class and the children that are in the courtyard will pull them aside to keep them from going to class. Peer pressure is hard to turn from, but it is not impossible to walk away from. I make sure I get to class promptly because I care about my grades and how I present myself. It looks good when you are the first person in class with your materials ready and eager to learn. There are people in this world that are going to knock your concentration, but it is your job to remain focus on what is most

In her skillfully written narrative, Eaton delves into the complex reasons hindering equal access to a quality education for the nation's children, a problem with a long and messy history. Beginning with Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, the U.S. courts were, for a few decades at least, a place where civil rights made noteworthy gains. But in many places the attempts at desegregation were never really established, and by the '80s, what had been accomplished was quickly being lost. The reasons for today's education faults are, for many, almost undetectable. The author presents a fascinating group of kids from an inner-city school in Hartford, Connecticut, who struggle to learn in a characteristically disheartened and under-funded urban public school.…

Jonathan Kozol brings our attention to the obvious growing trend of racial segregation within America’s urban and inner city schools. He creates logical support by providing frightening statistics to his claims stemming from his research and observations of different school environments. He also provides emotional support by sharing the stories and experiences of the teachers and students, as well as maintaining strong credibility with his informative tone throughout the entire essay.…

This school was named after a hero. A man who made mistakes but tried to fix them. He was one of the first men in this city after the civil war to try and unite the black and whites together. But do you think he would be happy having the school he was named after divided because of the reminders of the war? Though he was a rebel, that does not mean we have to stay the rebels. It is past the time for a change. We need to stay up to date in our teaching methods as well as our social understanding for one another. We should not forget our past, but we do not need to live in it daily or have a reminder of it daily. Our goal as a school is to teach the students. But if something is impacting their learning ability and we do not do anything about…

    Howard personal statement

Howard University is a private school that was founded/ created in 1867. 7,147 people haven’t graduated from there. It is in Washington D.C. This is in Virginia. This school has 33% male and 67% female. I think this is very impressive because, since I am a girl, this is a very great thing. It shows that women are taking more responsibility in their lives. At first I thought Black Colleges would be bad because they have a separate college for black people and usually black people are discriminated. I thought it would be a cheap little ugly place, but they are very impressive. This essay, allowed me to actually stop and appreciate what is right in front of me. It allowed me to see that black colleges and universities are like other colleges and even better. It doesn’t matter the race of the school, it just matters what you are learning. I think that this report really helped clear my mind of all those stupid racial things my teachers say. I just noticed that you never hear about black colleges. I think that is soo stupid. It shows again that they are trying to say that black people are less important than white people. They are saying white colleges are better than black colleges, but that’s wrong. What is weird is that Howard University has 60.9 % of its classes with fewer than 20 students. Most colleges I would think have a lot more students in a class room. But that is a good thing, because more students get one on one attention. Black colleges seem much more teachy. It seems like they are more into education. Another good thing about Howard is that they have a very diverse student body. The student body office has people with different cultures, races, and genders. This is promoting the idea of equality. That is why I love the fascinating, wonderful, awesome, fantastic, black, Howard University.…

It was only a year ago when I was faced with making a very important decision that would affect me for the rest of my life. It was time for me to choose an institution of higher learning to continue my studies that would eventually lead me to my career. My decision wasn’t simply which university or college to choose, but as a young black student, whether to choose a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) or a Predominately White Institution (PWI). This would take me on an insightful journey and I would make my decision after discussing the pros and cons of both institutions and through interactions with students, faculty and staff. Before too long it was clear to me that “white campuses provide superior environments for black educational development” and provide the best eventual opportunities and benefits for the student (Allen, W.R.).…

For my entire life of schooling, both my parents and I would agree that I constantly complained about the educational systems in which I was enrolled. But when I actually take the time to think about everything I have been through, I realize that I have indeed had an excellent education. My schooling was full of opportunities and experiences, all of which contributed to the person I am today; adequate education has been an indispensable facet of my being. Sadly, not everyone has had this same privilege. And now as a college student, I am becoming even more aware of this sad fact. Looking around me in such a diverse city as Chicago, I find myself being more and more grateful. When I read Jonathan Kozol's Fremont High School, this these feelings were even more reassured.…

“[Black boys] are not seen as childlike but adultified; as black males, they are denied the masculine dispensation constituting white males as being ‘naturally naughty’ and are discerned as willfully bad (80).” School is supposed to be a place where children learn, develop and grow. However, when a child is adultified this cannot really occur. This means that adults they interact with believe that their future is pre-determined. A common phrase used without the book is “that kid has a jail cell with his name on it.” When educators have this kind of mentality where they believe they are not going to be able to change this student they do not attempt to—in their head they are as developed, as they will ever be, just as an adult would be.…

There are many accomplishments in my life of which I am proud, however there are two for which I am especially proud. Those being, having the opportunity to play varsity shortstop in high school, and having good enough grades to be nominated for, and to be admitted into, the National Honor Society. These accomplishments make me proud because they are goals that I was able to set and accomplish for myself. These are successes that not everyone can say that they have achieved.…

As a student of Newton-Conover High School, I am honored of being among those who qualify for The National Honors Society. Throughout my years in school, I have always wanted to exceed and pursue in my education. My goals in high school were to be accepted into different programs and societies based on my excellence performed during school. I have been a member of The National Beta Club since middle school and continue to be apart of. I have looked forward to opportunities just like these since I was in elementary school. Being apart of this society will not only help me today or tomorrow but in the future as well. I feel like I fit well into this society because I love serving for the community as well as being a leader and helping others out. I would be more than happy to accept this honor of being accepted into The National Honors Society because I have worked my hardest in school and out of school to become a succeeding individual each and everyday.…

According to Michelle Akers, “I think the challenge is, to take difficult and painful times and turn them into something beneficial, something that makes you grow.” Just like every human being, I have had my fair share of challenges to face. My parents were born and raised in Mexico. Being from the type of family both my parents had, education was not an option and no importance was taken toward it. They both dropped out of high school and began to work in factories to help their families with financial problems. They realized how hard it was to earn a living and to maintain a family without a proper education. When I was four years old and my sister was nine, my parents made the decision to send us to Brownsville, TX for a proper American education.…

Many of the articles that I have chosen to address this topic agreed that the plight of the African- American male is linked directly to discrimination in the school system which is preceded by poverty and incarceration. According to Whatever it Takes (2005), “Nationally, only about two-thirds of all students who enter 9th grade graduate with regular high school diplomas four years later. For minority males, these figures are far lower. In 2001, on average, 72% of female students, but only 64% of male students graduated. African American students had a graduation rate of 50%,…

As Senator Barack Obama verbalized that the late fifties and early sixties were [….] “a time when segregation was still the law of the land and opportunity was systematically constricted” (Obama, 2008). Racial inequality within school facilities has always been a major problem; Plessy v. Ferguson was the case to establish this type of inequality within the school system, resulting the separation of facilities for education. Blacks and whites attended at different schools, hoping to get the same education, which in most cases was unlikely to transpire (Greenberg 2003, 532-533). As Senator Barack Obama stated, “ Segregated schools were, and are, inferior schools; we still haven't fixed them, fifty years after Brown v. Board of Education, and the inferior education they provided, then and now, helps explain the pervasive achievement gap between today's black and white students”(Obama, 2008). As a result, there is now a big gap between black and white students in the board of education, affecting a community of people economically; the Brown’s case was a very unforgettable part of black history (Greenberg 2003, 535). “A lack of economic opportunity among black men, and the shame and frustration that came from not being able to provide for one's family, contributed to the erosion of black families -…

My advice to you is to not goof off and horse around in class, because if you do you will most likely regret it later on and realize that if you would have paid more attention during class and turned in all your work on time high school would be easier. I can tell you that from experience because now it’s really difficult for me to work from all the procrastinating that I have built up and has become a habit. I have now formed a habit of doing my work and setting reminders for myself to do my homework that I have at home and read ahead to be ahead of class so I can keep up and be more recommendable for my college letter of recommendation.…
