physically and psychologically. Sometimes, people directly hurt minority people because of the discrimination. Also, they can hurt them indirectly by word or act. That’s why the discrimination is the social problem. In the lecture, the professor gave two causes of discrimination; frustration-aggression and projection.
These both are psychological origins of the discrimination. The frustration-aggression can give people a sense of superiority over the people who in the minority group. Also they may express their aggression and frustration as the act or word to the minority people. The professor stated that projection is a mechanism of ego-defense. In other words, “it defends oneself against one’s own unconscious impulses or qualities by denying their existence while attributing them to others.” Instead of frustration aggression and projection, there are another causes of the discrimination. Economic and cultural factor also can lead the discrimination. It is difficult to declare the absolute cause of the discrimination. The discrimination occurs because of the combination of several
causes. The discrimination is based on the own thought, so it is hard to totally eliminate the discrimination. However, the understanding other culture and group is one of the way to reduce the discrimination. In order for more people to understand other culture, multicultural education can help a lot. According to the lecture, the multicultural education can dispel the myth or stereotype for the other culture or groups. Thus, it can make people to accept diversity easier. In addition to the benefit to know other culture, there is the benefit for the people in the minority group. If the school teach about other cultures, the people in the minority group can teach their own experience, and it can help them to get into the other group. To sum up, the comprehension of other groups or culture is one of the way to reduce the discrimination.
