We all dream of beautiful beaches with idilic white sand and a sea as clear as running water. However when Richard finds the idea of paradise held by himself and many others, it is not at all as it seems.
Accompanied by two French tourists he met on Thailand's mainland, they set off to find the island that was revealed to him by one of its original founders, a character known as Daffy. When they arrive they find that there are several others who are already living on the island and have been doing so for a number of years. They are quickly accepted into the group and begin their new life on the beach finding it easy to forget about their previous lives of normality. All is prefect until things start to go wrong due to the actions of others living on the island and the leadership is questioned.
The novel is set on an off-limits to tourists island just of the coast of Thailand. Filled with Thai guards who are in control of keeping the marijuana being grown by the corrupt Thai government a secret, the people living on the island are under constant threat of being killed. Although the guards are aware of their inhabitance on the island, attention must not be drawn to as it is in the deal that they have made with them. As a result of this, newcomers must be few and infrequent.
This thrilling novel is able to capture your imagination and make is impossible for you to put the book down due to the unexpected twists that arise in it. Written in first person and narrated by main character Richard, we can therefore know exactly what he thinks and feels which then influences our feelings towards the other characters.
This is one of the books which I have recently read that I have enjoyed most because of the fast pace chain of dark and sinister events that occur, making it unimaginable to become bored whilst reading this book.
