Mistakes In Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why
A high school girl, new to the town and new to the school, commits suicide because of the things others have done to her. She made tapes with the people who lead her to end her life. Hannah was a freshman at a new school and a new town, she wanted to use that to her advantage but then rumors started. She recorded seven cassette tapes with thirteen people on them, they were the people who lead to her suicide. The rumors tie in to a theme of the novel, rumors are almost impossible to disprove. Hannah uses the tapes to justify committing suicide and the people on the tapes did unreasonable things that lead to her actions. In the novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, the setting and point of view affect the themes.
One theme is that rumors are

Hannah new to the town in the setting and no one knows her. At the beginning of the novel Hannah explains her new home, “ I was just cautious. New town. New school. And this time, I was going to be in control of how people saw me”, (Asher 11). To explain Hannah was new to a small town and she does not know anyone. She wants to use this setting to her advantage and have people see her in a certain way. She is cautious about her actions in the beginning. Furthermore, Hannah sees this new town as a fresh start. She wants to take control of her reputation. Hannah has her first kiss and the boy starts rumors about her being easy and slutty. Hannah tries to stop the rumors and save her reputation. It is hard to disprove the rumors without some friends to count on to back her up. After the rumors start, Hannah talks about a list going around her new school and she was voted on the hot side with the best ass in freshman class, “ i tilted my head so I could read the upside down title of the paper: FRESHMAN CLASS- WHO’S HOT/ WHO’S NOT”,(Asher 39). …show more content…
She uses that to justify her suicide. Hannah explains “I hope you’re ready, because i’m about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically why I ended it. And if you’re listening to these tapes, you’re one of the reasons why”, (Asher 7). In like manner, Hannah is telling anyone listening to the tapes that they are one of the reasons she ended her life. That is Hannah’s way of justifies her suicide. Significantly, if Hannah had not sent out the tapes then the reader cannot see how it could be justifiable, although there would be no novel without her sending out the tapes. She uses the tapes to explain and justify why she ended her life. As can be seen, Hannah ended her life because from her point of view the people on the tapes had done her wrong and she thinks there is no other way to get out of the life she is living. She makes the tapes and sends them to the people on it them to show them what they did to her to make her end her

The movie shapes Hannah to look like she was around 16 to 18 years old. Despite this, Hannah and her parents, do not have Aaron (a.k.a Ron Ron) with them in the movie. Without Ron Ron this throws off the whole plot. To elaborate further about the book, Aaron found the piece of cloth and hid it in the dirty laundry. To illustrate, Aaron had to read in front of the whole group. Now without him, they just have a normal Seder with three children and not four. When Aunt Eva chose Hannah to open the door, that is the same for both, but when Hannah opened the door, she walked down the hallway it took a different way of getting to the small village in 1942. Whereas, in the book Hannah opens the door and she is already there in the village, listening to Shmuel singing and working out in the field, and Gitl cleaning dishes and making some sort of food. Speaking of Shmuel and Gitl, there was a Shmuel, but no Gitl in the movie. Also Shmuel looked a lot younger than I thought he was, but I think that is just because Hannah looks a lot older than she should have in the book. Setting that to the side, we move on to the plot, where the main thing is how Hannah does not get her name changed to Chaya but it stays at Hannah. Speaking of names, Hannah was Rivkah’s cousin in They also set the Synagogue on fire when they left the camp in the movie. Along with…

“And there in your eyes, what was it? Sadness? Pain? You moved around me and tried pushing your hair away from your face. Your fingernails were dark blue.” (259). Clay was having a flashback to when he last saw Hannah through the halls and how she looked like, when he saw her and how sad she looked. How this is important is because she was giving him a sign that she isn’t alright and boxed up. Also, she was trying to hide the fact that she was depressed,…

The novel displays teenagers as reckless through their inappropriate behaviour. In the chapter 'Getting Serious' Lockie and Vicki are alone in her house and they engage in sexual activities disregarding the possible consequences. This is also shown later on in the book in the chapter 'Ocean Beach' where they again act without thinking. The two chapters give the reader a clear example that teenagers can be reckless due to their inappropriate behaviour.…

The main characters are parallels to each other. For example, when Melinda and Cady start out in in highschool, they enter having no ideas what to expect. “My first class is biology. I can’t find it and I get my first demerit.” (Anderson 6). In the Mean Girls movie, Cady asked where her health class was and her friends made her miss her entire class. Another example is how they favourite one class and excel in it. For Cady shes so good at math that in Junior year, she takes senior AP trig. Melinda also favours art “Art follows lunch like a dream follows a nightmare.” (9). One final similarity is that they enter high school with no friends. On the first day of school, Cady gets denied seats in her first class because people didn’t want her to sit near them. When Melinda goes to school on the first day of school she has a hard time finding a seat on the bleachers because all of her friends abandoned her “I am an outcast. There is no point looking for my ex-friends.” (4).…

-Peer relationships throughout this movie seem to be the most important aspect of these teenagers lives. They are all trying to impress each other and one up each other. The teens have a lot of high risk behavior that has put them in many dangerous situations. For example, when the trend traveled to East Los Angeles in the early morning to buy marijuana from a hispanic gangster, Hector, that they did not even know. By the end of the drug deal Toby was on his knees, peeing pants, with Hector having a gun pointed to his head threatening to kill him. Allison ended up bailing Toby out of this extremely dangerous situation. This scene was a prime example of the significance of teenagers moral development, high risk behaviors,…

Justin Foley, Alex Standall, Jessica Davis, Tyler Down, Courtney Crimsen, Marcus Cooley, Zach Dempsey, Ryan Shaver, Clay Jensen, Jenny Kurtz, Bryce Walker, Mr. Porter; all people listed on Hannah's tapes, all the people that connected to the issue's in which led to Hannah's suicide. Would Justin have affected Hannah's life the most? He was her first kiss, in a way he began everything. If not for Justin, the rumors about Hannah would not have started. Perhaps it was Marcus Cooley who impacted Hannah's life the most, And I couldn't look away as your fingertips caressed my knee...and started moving up (Page 142, Thirteen Reasons Why, Jay Asher), quotes Hannah Baker as Marcus moved his hand up her leg, the first person to ever do that do Hannah. Marcus touched Hannah in that way without her permission, without any sign of her wanting him to. Maybe it was Bryce Walker who held the most reason to why Hannah broke down, And then, just like…

The most disliked teenager that runs the halls is a popular blonde-.... She's tall and slender, with a waist as supple as a willow... slatternly tongue that devastates other kids with such insults.... She has two or three friends exactly like her, and together they dominate their realm. This is the typical popular girl as we in-vision partly because of the movies, but the movies must have gotten the foundation for such a character from a real life all American girl. And although not all stereotypes are true, this one seems to have quite a lot of truth to it. As he goes on into his theories he describes several “everyday American teenagers” from the bitchy popular girl to the gothic kids. But he ends up revealing this character in such a way as the,” male counterpart”. As in movies the typical football player is represented as muscular but dumb, with a face like a of a male model/ pretty boy and only two ways of speaking- in a conspiratorial whisper, to a friend; or in a drill sergeants sudden bellow. Not only does he get into the descriptions of the girls, but the typical jock. If one was too compare and contrast the people in their high school to the ones that Denby is speaking of, they will be able to pin point them perfectly. Denby uses many examples of stereotypes, but also presents ethos. He takes many movies and compares the characters from both views, so in a way he is…

Many of the concepts relate to psychology, and the fact that these kids are in the stage of adolescence. First off, one of the main concepts that I saw in this movie is that all of the kids showed the use of “false selves.” This is where an adolescent tell lies about themselves that they want people to believe so they think better of themselves, because “the other kids will never find out.” They lie a lot about their background and many other things such as their virginities which is a major thing in younger kids’ lives that decides whether they are a “prude” or a “slut.” Another concept that I saw, is the influence of peer pressure. These kids went through a lot of peer pressure in this movie including when the kids were talking about themselves, and wanting to know things about each other. One example is when the other kids, mainly Allison, pressures Claire to tell the others about her virginity. The final concept that I saw in this movie is the presence of a need for social acceptance. Many of these kids try to impress the others by telling lies and trying to act cool, whether it is John being a jerk to all the other kids, or Andrew bringing John to the ground to act cool. All of the kids somehow displayed their need for social acceptance. Overall I thought that this movie was a great…

One issue that the speaker addresses is the pressure to fit in with her peers. The poem deals with such topics as dancing and upcoming parties ("I have to learn to dance/ In time for the next party"), the importance of fashion ("I have nothing to wear tomorrow") and physical appearance ("Why do I have to be/ The one/ Wearing braces"). These are typical topics that cause teenagers to fear failure in terms of social acceptance. The pressure of not fitting into societal norms can oppress these young individuals, both emotionally and socially and the speaker is quite clear in the poem that she is concerned with these issues.…
