Modern Day Slavery Modern day slavery, also know as human trafficking is real and happens everywhere. Slavery today is a hidden crime, making it harder for victims to get help. Slaves today are cheap and disposable. In 1850 slaves cost about $40,00 (Slavery Today). Although illegal everywhere, Modern day slavery happens everyday in places you would least expect it. The United States is the last place you would expect slavery to happen, but it does. Most times, the victim is lured into trafficking being promised a job and a better life. There are about 60,000 slaves in the U.S today ( This Map). They are overworked and underpaid, if paid at all. Victims are beaten and threatened, leaving them terrified to leave, or go for help (What is Modern

Mauritania is a country in North Africa that has a large percentage of slavery in their population. 20% of the population in Mauritania are slaves( Slavery's Last Stand) Mauritania was the last country to abolish slavery and If the government found out that you were against slavery you could get into a lot of trouble. It wasn't until 2007 that Mauritania passed a law that criminalized the act of owning another person. Although there has only been one prosecuted case (Slavery's Last Stand). In Russia there is an awareness that they have a problem with slavery, and even though it’s illegal they make no effort to control or eliminate it (Russia). There are more than one million people living as modern day slaves in Russia (Over 1 Million Russians Are Modern Slaves ) . There was a significant increase in foreign forced labor (Russia). Modern day slavery is illegal everywhere, but still happens in places that you would not expect, or know of.
