What is the Molar Concentration (Solute concentration) of a Potato?
-------------------------------------------------

Design
-------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------
1. What is the dependent variable for this experiment?
-------------------------------------------------
The dependent variable is the concentration (solute) of the potato.
-------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------
2. What is the independent variable for this experiment?
-------------------------------------------------
The independent variable is the concentration (solute) in which the potatoes are put in.
-------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------
3. What were some controlled variables (constants) for this experiment?
-------------------------------------------------
A particularly important controlled variable in this experiment was the type or batch of potatoes. This is because; often potatoes sold on the same supermarket may come from different places and therefore affect the experimental results. Another controlled variable was the place in which potatoes were placed; they were placed under the same sunlight/shade, same room temperature and general area of the class. This was done with a final objective of making the environment equal to all potato samples undergoing the experiment. Finally, another important controlled variable was the amount of time that each potato was left in solution.

There were six sucrose solutions: 0.0 M (distilled water), 0.2 M, 0.4 M, 0.6 M, 0.8 M, and 1.0 M. The dependent variable was the mass of the cores of apple tissue. Changes in the dependent variable were measured by weighing the mass of each set of apple cores before and after its submerging in sucrose solution. The initial mass was then subtracted from the final mass and divided by the initial mass to calculate the percent change of each set. Changes in the dependent variable were analyzed in the form of percent change of mass rather than change in mass in grams because each set of apple cylinders had a different initial weight, so calculating percent change helped standardize the data. The control of the experiment was the distilled water because it has a molarity of 0.0 M, meaning that no sucrose is added to it. Several variables were held constant. It was attempted to keep the size of each core of apple tissue constant. Other constants include the ruler and scale used to measure the apple cores, as well as the knife used to cut the…

This exercise involves estimating the osmotic concentration of potato tuber cells by using a change in mass method. The null hypothesis states that there will be no change of mass of the potato disks after they have been incubated in any sucrose solution. This means that the concentration of sucrose that the potatoes are in will no effect the movement of water in or out of the potato cells. However, the alternative hypothesis states that the mass of the potato disks will increase after they have been incubated in a hypertonic solution. The mass of the potato disks will decrease after they have been incubated in a hypertonic solution. After the results have been gathered, appropriate estimations can then be made as to what the osmotic concentrations of the potato tuber cells are. Osmotic concentrations will either be hypertonic, hypotonic or isotonic depending on the results of mass change of the potato tubers.…

Hypothesis If a banana is placed on the counter and another banana is placed in the refrigerator, then the banana placed in the refrigerator will brown faster. Materials 2 paper plates 2 bananas pencil and paper to record results Procedures 1. Get two paper plates. 2. Place one banana on one of the paper plates and place it in the refrigerator. 3. Place the second banana on another paper plate and place it on the counter. 4. Record observations daily. Responding (Dependent) Variable The banana placed on the counter browns faster than the banana placed in the refrigerator. It takes the banana on the counter six days to completely turn brown. It takes the banana in the refrigerator seven days to completely turn brown. Controlled Variables (Held Constant) The brand of banana was kept the same, along with the location of each banana. Conclusion Based on the data collected, the banana placed on the counter browned faster then the banana placed in the refrigerator. Therefore, the hypothesis was incorrect. Bibliography Brooks, John.
