Instead of wasting a large amount of money on the Olympics, we could be saving lives around the world. The money spent on the Olympics Games could be used for better causes such as “GlobalGiving” to provide shelter, education, food and way more for the poor or to clean up an area that was strongly impacted by a natural disaster. The cost for Rio is estimated to be around 4.6 billion dollars, that’s 4.6 billion dollars that could have been used to save
many lives across the world.
The facilities that costed billions of dollars to make are sometimes never used after the Olympics. Every four years the host country is changed, due to this they have to make new facilities every time they have the Olympics and so much money and time is just wasted just to make facilities that will soon be abandoned. The facilities will pollute the area and also waste land. There are barricades, swimming pools, hotels and more facilities that have been abandoned. Some examples are the Olympic Village in Athens is now decaying, the ski jumping venue in Sarajevo and the Bobsled track also located in Sarajevo.
The large amount of excessive money spent on the Olympics has ruined the original purpose of the Olympics Games. The original purpose of the game was to celebrate the competition of athletes and their superior physical qualities and to enforce the relationships between the various Greek cities, however now day’s people are using drugs and taking steroids to win events in the games which is against the original concept. For example, after winning the gold medal in the 100 metre, Ben Johnson tested positive for an anabolic steroid. In conclusion, it is understandable that there is way too much money spent on the Olympics Games. The money could have been used for better causes, some facilities may be abandoned after the Olympics and this is an unnecessary waste. The extreme amount of money that’s put into the Olympics has ruined the original concept of the Olympics which was about the fair competition between athletes, not an attitude of win at any cost.
