Fear often becomes our worst enemy when it makes you become irrational and stops you from thinking clearly. First of all, fear can make us become overly cautious, to the point where it causes harm. In Nadine Gordimer’s novel “Once Upon a Time” a family builds a barbed wire wall because they are so afraid of the robberies and the boy decides to explore the fence and dies from being shredded by the wire “(the boy) dragged a ladder to the wall, the shining coiled tunnel...with the first fixing of its razor-teeth in his knees and hands and head he… struggled deeper into its tangle.” (Gordimer, 6 ). The family built the fence to protect themselves but it only ended up hurting them. The family’s fear ended up destroying them. Throughout my life,…

Someone may think that they wouldn’t overact in a scary situation, but when it becomes a reality, then the thought process may change. Take Edgar Allen Poe’s, The Masque of the Red Death, for example the people couldn’t face their fear of death and hid from it. They failed to face the fact that they were going to die. The stories The Masque of the Red Death, The Lottery, and The Tell Tale Heart all show the reactions of fear and their reality.…

There are several themes throughout this story. Introspection, Steve must come to terms with his own identity. He accomplishes this throughout the novel in his journal entries which he makes during his time in jail awaiting trial. Peer Pressure, This theme is the basis for how he ended up in his current situation. Had he not given into the peer pressure by James King he wouldn’t have been involved with the robbery that led to the death of the store clerk. Humanity, Steve is called a "monster" by the Prosecutor at the beginning of the novel and Steve grapples with the question of whether or not he is monstrous for his actions in the robbery. He is constantly reflecting upon this in his journal entries. The word can also be found scribbled faintly and scratched out on pages of the novel itself.…

The main points discussed are the reason behind good people doing bad things, dehumanization, heroes and the effect of institutional power. The author was arguing that a person cannot quite literally be sweet, if they are surrounded by a sour environment. The strengths possessed in this article were that dehumanization is a very real notion as well as the fact that people change with the induction of anonymity. The weakness that is portrayed is that there are heroes around when in fact, yes they are around, but they are a quickly dying breed. My conclusion is that by uniting everyone and seeing each other as another human life regardless of being anonymous or not that maybe experiments like the Stanford experiment might not have needed to be done.…

The Embodiment of Societal Fears and Flaws in Monsters Not everything is what it seems. Underlying meanings are often much more common than we realize, yet easily overlooked. Throughout literature, this is very prominent, specifically with authors using their characters to represent deeper meanings through their existence. The theme of “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street” is that the mind of man can lead to the destruction and Rod tried to warn his audience about jumping to conclusions. In scene 3, sentence 2, it states, “there are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, and prejudices, found only in the minds of men” (428). The mind is an extension of our body and when suspicion is introduced, thoughts become a selfish action as you value yourself over others. A thought can lead to suspicion that leads to hatred and that leads to destructive actions. Scene 3 also states, “The thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat as a fallout for the children, and the children unborn. Your actions today can create a fallout for everyone today and in the future.…

Fear is an emotion that everyone has and comes in many different shapes and forms. Typically in children that fear takes form as a monster. As a child I found my monster in the form of aliens. The word monster derives from the old French word monstre which in the 13th century was a term to describe a “disfigured person”. Over hundreds of year this word has taken many meanings. In my case the definition of my monster is the fifth definition in the Oxford English dictionary,”A person of repulsively unnatural character, or exhibiting such extreme cruelty as to appear in human; a monstrous example of evil, a vice, etc.” This relates to my monster because in my case my aliens were only doing evil and were nothing like anything from Earth.…
