Motivation Theories
Describe how the people can be motivated in your two companies? Use the following theories: Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, McGregor’s X & Y Theory, Herzberg’s Two Factor Theory and the Three Needs Theory!

Siemens
All four motivation theories have some positive aspects. The first three are very well known and they are three of the oldest motivation theories developed. Some aspects of each theory are represented in today’s motivation theories in big organizations.
Basically Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a summary of all needs a human being can desire. Even today there is nothing speaking against this theory. Everyone has physiological-, safety-, social-, esteem- and self – actualization needs. Nowadays Theory Y is much more effective than Theory X. However there are always levels in an organization and work which has to be supervised more strictly and be managed by Theory X. Not for Siemens though. Siemens has clear goals and objectives and sets deadlines to achieve them. However the employees are tried to be integrated and motivated on a steady basis. At Siemens also Herzberg’s Two Factor Theory is taken into account. According to Herzberg a little salary causes dissatisfaction. However a higher salary just causes no dissatisfaction and not satisfaction. Siemens knows that and for instance at higher management level not only the salary is increased but there are also long time bonuses for fulfilled achievements, company shares for growth and so on. With these motivation factors Siemens also tries to satisfy his employees. In addition to that Siemens employees are given many physiological and safety needs like health care, insurance, spa programs, part & flextime work, childcare and many more. Social needs are also taken into account since it is tried for management and employees to have a ‘theory x’ relationship. That is why once a year, all Siemens managers worldwide receive feedback from their employees based on 10 specific aspects. Management is not a one

    i) McClelland’s Theory of Needs McClelland’s theory of needs was created by David Clarence McClelland. He is known for his work in the field of motivation. McClelland was influenced to come up with the theory of needs after further developed the theory of Henry Murray who was one of the original psychologists to scrutinize human needs. This theory is important in influencing the person’s motivation and effectiveness in certain job functions. The theory of needs is being classified into three broad categories which are, need for power, need for affiliation and need for achievement. Firstly, need for power. The need for power is a desire for authority. The need for power cannot be only perceived as need to be dictator but it is the need to be strong, influential and give impacts on others. People who need personal power tend to direct others and this need often seen as undesirable, while people who need institutional power want to organize the efforts of others to achieve the organization’s goals. There are two types of power which are personal and institutional. For example, manager with a high need for institutional power tend to be more effective than manager with a high need for personal power. In addition, the need for power helps manager to ensure that all employees always on right track to achieve the organization’s goals. Secondly, need for affiliation. The need for affiliation refers to a desire to seek approval from others, conform to their wishes and expectations, and avoid conflict and confrontation (Mcshane.S.T, 2010). Besides, it is the desire for harmonious relationship with other people and the need to be accepted by other people. People with high need for affiliation always wanted to be accepted where they try to make favorable image of themselves.
