Teamwork is not a new process in health care. Since the beginning of organized health care individual health care providers have had assistance from other providers. The teamwork model is changing in modern health care to include the staff involved in the implementation of the decisions of the team. Diverse and synergistic teams are established to create procedures, accomplish goals, and brainstorm possible outcomes for problems presented to the team. “One of the biggest benefits of teamwork is synergy—the creation of a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Synergy occurs when teams use their resources to the fullest and achieve, through collective performance, far more than is otherwise possible” (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, & Kramer, 2007, p. 76).…
What are the advantages and challenges of teamwork in today’s health care organizations? Provide examples of common obstacles to successful group communication that you have experienced or read about. How did the group work through the challenges?…
The other barrier in collaborative working is the lack of communication between the team members (Thistlewaite, 2012). Studies suggest that inter professional collaboration in health and social care is improved by effective communication between the health professions (Strudwick and Day, 2014). For example in this case, the communication with Anne helped the professionals to understand Anne’s health needs, and thus the team could plan the care to meet her needs (Strudwick and Day, 2014). Moreover, the health professionals were discussing their findings with each other to ensure that Anne is receiving a good quality care. This interaction also indicates that the team had a common goal, the safe and holistic care of Anne, and they were working…
Promoting interdisciplinary care is essential to any functional and successful healthcare setting for both patients and staff. In the given case study there are several disciplines that are not being utilized to the benefit of Ms. W (FNP) and Ms. R, the patient. As the nurse supervisor it would be my responsibility to ensure that staff members on every level knew the resources available to them and how they could benefit the patients. To spread this information an employee meeting may be appropriate so that all staff members could communicate their roles and opportunities for patient involvement. This would also need to include the steps a practitioner would follow to engage an appropriate discipline.…
Implications for promoting inter- professional collaboration is improved communication about the care needs of the patient and how best to carry out those needs. Another advantage is that it builds…
Inerprofessional collaboration (IPC) is defined as “the coordination of patient care that is provided by a diverse group of healthcare practitioners working collaboratively to provide timely, safe, high quality, patient-centered care that relies on the unique knowledge and skills of the each member of the healthcare team”(Woten, 2017). The IPC consists of but it is not limited to nurses, physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, dietitians, physical therapists, health educators, social workers, clergy, health educators, and pharmacists (Woten, 2017). Members of the ICP need to utilize their knowledge and experience to provide the best possible care to the patient. Their work should be based on the open…
Interdisciplinary cooperation involves the solving of a common set of problems where “each member’s assessment must take into account the other’s contributions to allow for holistic management” (Hall & Weaver, 2001). Each skill contributed by this team member would complement another’s while assessing, planning and evaluating patient care, (Xryrichis & Ream, 2008). Interdisciplinary teams would involve multiple disciplines such as social workers, dieticians, nutritionists, specialists, internists, and many other types. Every collaborating member with their own set of skills unique to the patient’s…
The chronic illness management in teams of urban multidisciplinary scholars (CIMTUMS) project discusses the use of interprofessional learning teams to enhance patient outcomes with diabetic patients. After implementing interprofessional learning teams, knowledge and management of diabetes improved among the patients. Theoretical foundations for advanced Nursing roles and interprofessional collaboration has provided me with a wide variety of educational discussions that has influenced my professional development as a Nurse practitioner student. Now I have the knowledge to analyze theories, complex practices/organizational issues, interprofessional teams and leadership strategies in managing healthcare. Achievement of the educational preparation fulfilled by this course is exhibited through the attainment of the six course objectives.…
Today I was assigned in VSU-Student Health Center and the two points that I am going to address on this clinical setting are: What is your analysis of interdisciplinary or interagency functioning and communication, decision-making process, team functioning and collaboration; and Will you function differently as a result of something you learned, if so how?…
In almost any capacity the demands of life can be both hectic and challenging. In light of this, the processes by which life is lived, shared and nurtured must involve organization, effective communication, and collaboration. This simple concept is true of life on almost any level but it is especially true when concerning healthcare. As such, it is important to look at the effectiveness of communication and collaboration within the health care system. This consideration is important because effective communication and collaboration within the health care system has a direct correlation and obvious potential impact on the quality of care provided to the patient. The College of Nurses of Ontario defines interprofessional collaboration as “working…
On television one person is usually responsible for the entirety of the patient’s care. The doctor performs the task of two or three individuals. Usually the physician is given the credit for all of the work done by nurses and technicians. They are portrayed as brilliant individuals who can diagnose any illness, even the most uncommon. However, in the real world many people aid in the care of a patient. The nurses do most of the hands on work, and technicians run lab tests and get results. The doctors diagnose patients but often have a difficult time doing so. They consult with other physicians and medical staff members before telling a patient their diagnosis. It takes a team not a man to run a…
I was able to learn about the importance of effective medical education and communication with my patients through creating nutrition materials on the different food groups and chronic ailments such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart attacks as well as consulting with patients weekly to find out what they needed and desired to improve their health and how I could direct them to their needs. At Haven, I exchanged ideas with each of my patients on how they and their families can live healthier lives as I learned about their diverse lives and tried to make sense of it for them and others. Haven taught me how to become an effective listener, a fast learner, and an effective deliberator within a healthcare setting and serves as the foundation of those skills in my upcoming medical…
From my past experiences, I believe that having professional conversations is necessary in the clinical setting. Though one may feel a certain type of way about a situation, clinical case or a patient, it is beneficial that individual does not get wrapped up in their personal feelings because it can change the direction or the outcome of the conversation. As healthcare providers, it is imperative that we must remember that effective communication has been proven to have a positive impact on patient care. Finally, as healthcare professionals it is our individual responsibility to make sure that we communicate effectively with one another in the workplace. The purpose of this assignment is to record and reflect a journal of my last 5 days in…
