Music in Our Society
The role of music in our society
Nowadays, music is not taken into account as it used to be. However, how important is it for our society? In this essay, I will examine this subject from two different perspectives: the professional musician and the music teacher, adding my own views on the status of music today.
It is often said that music does not play a significant role for most people but the reality is that it actually plays a very important role in our lives even if we do not notice. It is usually the case that we think that music is something so common that it is often taken for granted. From the classical performer’s point of view it is very difficult to find work nowadays and if they find something the payment is usually very low. However, for rock musicians it is easier to find work as they give many live presentations and they could sell their CD’s in these presentations.
In the case of music teachers, they believe that music is now less important than mathematics at school. Nevertheless, they think that learning music is very important from early age as it has significant benefits such as creativeness and new friendships for the child.
Music has proven to have some benefits like making a child very disciplined because playing an instrument requires commitment and dedication. On the other hand, there are benefits we may get from listening to music like being relaxed and entertained.
It is true that our musical tastes have been changing in the last decades but this is not say it has become less important for us. One argument in favour of this is that our mood is still completely affected by music. We may be completely stressed but if we listen to what each person considers relaxing music, we will be instantly calmed. On the other hand, if we listen to disruptive music we could feel nervous. In conclusion, music will always be part of our lives.
