I currently attend the University of the Pacific and I am majoring in Business/Pre-Law.

Personally math has always been both a struggle and a joy of mine. I realized in Jr. High that math was one of my favorite subjects and it just continued from that point on. Entering into highschool I took geometry and it was honestly a review because I took geometry as an 8th grader in
Jr. High. High-school math was very interesting and exciting because the teachers that I had knew the material fairly well and were able to educate the students in an amusing fashion.
Geometry(Freshman Year) and Algebra II(Sophomore Year) wasn’t all that challenging for me because a lot of it was review. Due to the fact that

This was a monumental mistake because I fell behind and struggled my first semester to even get a B. After learning from my immature mistakes, I decided to study over winter break so that I would be able to stay on top of things this time. Although I did my review, I still ended up with a B, but I wasn’t so stressed this semester. Lastly, senior year was a complete disaster.
Not only because of college apps and basketball, but because I wasn’t prepared to take calculus.
The relationship that I had with AP Calculus AB ultimately made me despise math for quite a while. Truthfully, I did not want to test into Calculus my freshman year at UOP because I didn’t want to go through what I did my senior year in high school. Therefore, I decided not to retest for the math placement test even though deep down inside I wanted to challenge myself. My brother did also advise me to take classes where I felt comfortable in because he didn’t want me to be overwhelmed my freshman year with a class that I didn’t really need to take as a freshman. I am

really looking forward to this Intermediate Algebra class because I want to receive joy

Rather than not pass math again, I chose to withdraw. I didn’t want to run the risk of barely passing and not being prepared for Math 110 which would then jeopardize my GI Bill. My Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) counselor recommended me to try Math 56 as it covered more material and I would have better an opportunity to pass it. I took Math 56 over this past summer. I did not pass the class yet, I felt more confident in my abilities to understand Algebra. Proudly, last semester I passed Math 56 and was one of the top students in the class. Without a strong foundation, Algebra has taken me along time to understand. With perseverance, my math anxiety has become manageable. Additionally, I came to learn about some challenges when using the GI Bill, for example, there is no pay when school is not in session. I went to the Palomar College Career Center to update my resume. Unfortunately, getting a part-time job on the weekends proved to be difficult. Hard work of looking for more income had paid off and I was able to find a job working with Veterans Office doing VA work study. Learning how to navigate through the college system in order to help my seventeen-year-old son go through the process is motivation to finish my education plan and…

I had some challenges in the first semester. I realized that it gets harder every year. I felt like ninth grade was a bit easier than this year. The final for English was easy. There were only two questions. We took a final for the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird. My goal is to have good grades, but also pass every class so that I don’t have to retake any. I want to be able to graduate on time. It always gets hard when almost end of the semester. That is the time when teachers start to give out more work. It’s a good idea but the same time bad. It can help bring grades up for some people. Most people are lazy so they rather not do it and fail the semester. My challenge was trying to focus with so many distractions in the way.…

Ever since I can remember, I loved mathematics. The exactness of it marveled me, while its complexity intrigued me. While others regarded math as straight forward, I believed that it required an ingenuity even higher than that of the arts. To me, a math problem was a chaotic sort of Lego pieces and the answer to the problem was the finished Lego set. The real fun was in devising the instructions on how to get from the original jumbled mess to the final pristine solution. However, the other kids around me scorned math and relished in what they considered to be more imaginative pursuits, such as reading a book or drawing pictures. If I could show my peers math from the way I see it, I was sure its beauty would astound them, and they would appreciate it as much as I do.…

Math has always been difficult for me. I have struggled with how to figure out problems and how I can do my best in math class. I was really worried about my grade in math because I wanted to succeed in all my classes in order to get accepted to my first college choice. I started figuring out the math problems in my head and practicing them at home.I used my calculator and computer to help me to solve my math problems. I soon found out that Math wasn't as difficult as I thought it was because I had learned the steps to solve the equations. No matter how difficult the problems were, I always persevered through them. That is how I learned that no matter how hard something is, with practice and repetition you can achieve your best potential.…

In today’s society there are many people living in poverty. All across America there are different projects and reservations where the less fortunate reside. Statistics show that mostly minorities live in these different locations. Native Americans and African Americans are two of the more popular races living in these places. The group suffering the most in these situations is the youth. Although both Native American and African American children living on a reservation or in the projects experience a terrible community, have little to no faith, and a broken family structure, African American youth living in the projects have it worse than Native American children living on a reservation.…

It was a beautiful summer day at the beginning of my senior year. Students were anxious to meet their teachers and begin the last year of their high school career. There were those excited to graduate that knew exactly what they wanted to do with their life. Then there were those like me who had no idea what college they would be attending the following year. I knew I wanted to go to college, but I had no idea which one I wanted to attend or what my major would be. After I arrived that morning, I walked into the crowded hallway of my 4A public school on my way to my first and hardest class, pre-calculus AP. I was one of the last ones to enter the classroom and had no other choice but to sit next to my ex-best friend. It was already a bad day. Once the bell rang, Mr. Rogers, an older teacher with gray hair and big circular glasses, stood in front of the classroom and began teaching our first lesson. Within five minutes of the lesson, I was already lost. Once he turned around to see if anyone had questions, I was the first one to raise my hand.…

Competitive nature and the need to become the best was always on my mind. “Best” meaning the individual with the highest grades, GPA, and rank. To achieve this goal meant for me to take the most rigorous courses I thought I could handle, thus including the class, Math Honors III. My entire roadmap in high school required me to take an accelerated Math subject every school year, taking me to the AP Calculus level. My Junior year unfortunately took an unexpected turn in my plans. Throughout the first semester of Math Honors III, I have found myself struggling to maintain a passing grade “C.” Balancing time and focus between three other AP classes was not easy, due to the amount of work and dedication needed by this class. When the second semester…

“I can’t wait to be a senior” was something I would say whenever I walked into my anatomy class full of seniors who did nothing at all but every time I would Jesslyn would stop me, cock her eyebrow, make a ‘you are kidding me right?’ face and say “be careful what you wish for” and I’m now understanding what she meant. Learning responsibility, independence, and how to deal with stress is the most difficult for me coming into senior year.…

Senior high was a big struggle for me. Being inundated with new information at a rate that I have yet to acclimatise to, I was falling behind, lost in this rat race. I recalled feeling depressed often and my stress level was constantly high as I barely managed to scrape through the tutorials with minimal understanding. As more and more lectures and tutorials flew past, my doubts only snowballed. It came to a point whereby I was so overwhelmed by everything, I just broke down.…

There was a moment in life when I experienced a failure in passing a huge test to get accepted into one of the best middle schools in Baltimore Md . I Studied and prompted myself weeks before the testing date . I spent four hours a day each week to studied as much as I could . The test was to be given on a Friday of the year 2005 .For two weeks I studied alone and some days I asked my friends or family to review my study material with me . It seemed as if this test would determine what middle-school, high-school and eventually what college I was going to attend .…
