Book: Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools That Will Change The Way Think About Colleges, Loren Pope, 2012 (third revised edition), Penguin Books 1. The summary of Loren Pope’s message In reading this extremely interesting book, I found three core messages from Loren Pope. First, is the importance of thinking critically, the process of selecting a college that means a lot in your life. Selecting colleges based on rankings or brand is easy, requiring no in depth research or thinking on your part.…
Everyone is aware of the name Wake Forest University carries. Obviously, I too want to be part of the Demon Decan Community. Wake Forest embodies the community spirit that encourages intellectualism and promotes civic engagement. The biggest reason for transferring to Wake Forest University is the philosophy of educating the whole person. As an Aga Khan Foundation Youth Ambassador, I was heavily involved with sustainable projects that had a purpose of solving challenges the ambassadors identified in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. Neither of our projects were one day projects, or charitable in any sense. Because the Aga Khan Foundation focuses on sustainable development, the ambassadors make sure to model the work and “Think globally, act locally.” Rooted deep into Wake Forest’s community is the…
I would like to pursue counseling as my career and become a successful leader in the field. I have always had a passion to assist people in emotional distress. As a qualified professional in the counseling field, I would be able to identify their problems as well as offer them the most appropriate solutions that may help them deal with their situations. However, working as a professional counselor requires that I possess the relevant skills and knowledge that would enable me to offer quality services in which I think that I can obtain the skills at Capella University. As a professional clinical counselor, I would have to deal with clients with different problems, so my role would entail listening to their problems, preventing further damage/harm as well as relieving them from the psychologically based dysfunctions (emotional, nervous, mental and behavioral dysfunctions). In addition, I would have to create conducive environment for them, which promote their personal development and well-being. Consequently, I would therefore have to provide both vocational and educational planning for the patients. To achieve this effectively, I would require training that would enable me to administer and interpret various psychological personality tests as well as the standardized tests of memory, functioning, and intelligence. A clinical graduate degree in counseling at Capella University would enable me to get the necessary licensure that will grant me the authority to practice legitimately. My interest in counseling developed early when I was still in high school, where I offered fellow students advice on their personal problems; with time, my reputation as a great advisor grew and most students and roommates at the school often consulted me for advice. This interest developed further when I had an opportunity to offer…
Although I can’t answer all the questions about how I’ll do it, I’m certain that I want to make a difference in the world. Barnard’s atmosphere and its joint theater program are the main factors that have influenced me to apply. Academically, Barnard is known for its intimate learning environment. I’ve spent my entire life going from one close-knit group to the next. Whether it was Taekwondo, Dance, Theater, or The Commonwealth Governor’s School, each of those groups were empowering, nurturing, and noble in their own individual ways. Barnard embodies all of those qualities, which is what I find attractive. Also, the joint-program for theater really speaks to me because it’s my personal belief that collaborative endeavors create true art. It’s true art that touches the lives of those who work on it and those who see it.…

My academic goal at NOVA is to keep my GPA as high as I can for the next year. I have already completed my first year here. I plan to complete my science associates at Northern Virginia Community College. Then I plan to transfer to Virginia Tech, there I will finish my bachelors. My educational goal is to become a veterinarian for small animals. After I complete my bachelors at Virginia Tech, which I will finish with a biochemistry degree, I will apply to Virginia Tech's Virginia -Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. I have already looked at the prerequisites the school requires and I already have a lot of them, at NOVA. To be accepted into the school I will need experience working for a veterinarian as well. I plan to start with that…
I have been planning goals for myself since I was in the 7th grade. Some of those goals have already been accomplished and what joy has come over for me for making my dream goals reality. These goals change all of the time, from my major, to colleges and even where I want to reside after I graduate college. I have narrowed down my list though to a few more goals.…
My education will powerfully impact my community because I am determined to achieve my goals and in order to I must ignite leadership in others on campus. Leaders don't stop after accomplishing one thing or just because of failure. Good leaders persist; they look for ways to right injustices, grow their networks and encourage the younger generations to become successful…
Just as the AP course positively impacted me, with the assistance of the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship, I know I can have the same impact on the University of Louisville community. At the University of Louisville, I hope to earn my degree in chemical engineering. I do understand that this degree requires a lot of knowledge about mathematics. Because I was able to overcome difficult academic situations in high schools, I know I am better prepared to deal with these challenges in college. Furthermore, my experiences of struggling in my AP courses have helped me become more sympathetic to my peers. If I see one of my peers struggling, I will provide assistance to them because I know how hard it is to ask for help. By working with my peers, we can ultimately develop a friendship inside and outside the classroom. By developing these relationships, we can learn from one another. While I cannot change my peers’ perspectives about certain issues, I can introduce them to a new perspective, my perspective. By introducing my peers to my perspective, I have helped them become more self-aware as they can do the same for me. In essence, by attending the University of Louisville, I know I can uphold the University’s mission by improving my peers’ lives by sharing my own lived experiences in classrooms. By sharing my narrative and experiences, I know I will create a more diverse…

During my time at George Mason University, I had the pleasure of meeting new people and taking on academic challenges. With the knowledge that I have obtained from my experiences, I was able to transform myself from a student into a professional. This knowledge gave me skills and values that I could link to my future career. It also allowed me to magnify my strengths as well as get a better understanding of my weaknesses. These weaknesses were exposed in some of the classes that were deemed to be more difficult, but I managed to overcome them. Furthermore, because of the classes that I took, I had the opportunity to figure out what I would enjoy doing. These experiences have allowed me to recreate myself into a professional that can achieve great things. Now, with my newly developed self, I will continue forward where I will strive to make an impact wherever I may go.…

Although higher education has become more accessible to lower and middle-class citizens, many complex obstacles remain in place. Most students receive a culture shock when entering college for the first time; I’m still shocked. Whether it’s the college atmosphere, professor expectations, or workload, students can agree it’s different than they expected. First I had to realize why I was there: what was my goal? My overall goal is to earn my basic credits and eventually transfer my ACC credits to a four-year university in an attempt to save money. However, life often gets in the ways of one’s plans and can lead to unimaginable pathways. First starting college can be so overwhelming which is made worse by a mental illness that makes me feel as though the world is crumbling around me. Learning to see the world as it is, not…
The academic goals and career goals I have set for myself both long term and short term are essential for me to succeed in the future. My goal is to become a successful researcher to help other people in the world. I want to be able to use the education and my goals to discover new things that can benefit others. I have set both long term and short term goals that would help me lead to my main objective. Doing internships and working with other lab groups is a short term goal I have set to help me. I want to be able to use the hours of working in other labs to be able to work successful in my own lab. I have also set goals to sit down with professors and advisors every semester to see the progress I have made. I feel like the short term…
