my grand mother's house
My favorite place is my grandmother's house. My grandmother lives alone in Nankan. Nankan is located in near the border of Fukuoka prefecture. Nankan is a town encircled by the mountains and has the beauties of nature. My grandmother’s house is old-fashioned Japanese house and I like it. Our house is a little far from my house, so I can’t often go there. However, when I went there, I can get some fresh air and see many green mountains. So I can feel relaxed. There are three spots I like. I want to tell you about the spots.

At first, I’ll tell you about a Japanese style room. I like to sleep in the room of tatami and the smell of tatami is good. I can hear the song of birds because the room is quiet. A pleasant cool breeze blows, so I can sleep comfortably and it is a cozy room for me. Also, there is a veranda by the room. I like to see the sky and the stars sitting there. In the night, the starlit sky is so beautiful. When I am there, I feel like my heart become bigger.

Next, I’ll tell you about a garden. This is a garden my grandmother is proud of. My grandmother grows a lot of vegetables and fruits, for example, cucumber, pumpkin, adzuki bean and cherry. Also, there are persimmon trees. Sometimes I harvest them with my grandmother and she teaches me about a lot of things, so it is a lot of fun. The vegetables and fruits she grows are delicious and I like them, especially adzuki bean. She often makes steamed bun using adzuki bean she made. I sometimes enjoy making them with my grandmother. I like steamed bun she made. For this reason, I like the garden very much.

Finally, I’ll tell you about what is near my grandmother’s house. There is a stream and the water is clean. So there is fish in the stream. Also, we can see firefly in summer and it is very beautiful scene. I hope that the fish and firefly survive forever. I remember that I went fishing with my father when I was child. I was surprised that I caught a river crab. In this way, I have a lot of

The trip was quite fun because the mountains we were by were smooth while being very massive in size. The day was sunny at start but sooned became cloudy and grey I was worried that it would rain and we would have to cancel but that wasn’t the case. When we approached the lake it was massive very massive with little waves right behind each other while the smell of the open and the lake were all around me. The lake was beautiful while fish were jumping out into the air and splashed right back into the diamond lake. When I saw this I became so excited and was filled with joy. It was cloudy and breezy but the air around us was warm and soothing like being right by a fire on a breezy day. I quickly setup the equipment and grabbed my fishing rod, acquired the bait and started to fish. While I was fishing my Nina and her husband set up right by the edge of the ramp and me and my sister were set up on the side. The dog was right at the edge and about to fall of the ramp but he just stood there staring into the endless darkness of the lake. As i was enjoying the air I felt a tug on my rod and instantly knew There was a fish at the end, I instantly started to reel in my line a was struggling just a bit, the fish was also struggling and it was determined by who had the most stamina. I reeled in my line and there was a mid to large sized fished on the line and I felt proud that I caught my first fish of the day. After a hour I caught 4 fish and felt proud of myself for actually staying a whole day outside and having fun. We decided to head to the house when it started to rain. When we arrived at the house it was already turning night so we headed in but before we did that my Nina showed me how to gut a fish, even though it was disgusting it was informational. After that the rest of the stay was very relaxing and pleasent and was glad to travel there for half of the…

In a southern Oklahoma there is a large lake full of fish. In this place, on many warm summer days, my family and I would bring our boat to the lake and ride the cool calm water. We would anchor our boat and cast our rods and relax catching countless sparkling rainbow trout. My family and I did this for many years. The lake was large and always full of people, and it was surrounded by trees and full of fish. The smells were great, as well as the campfires and food, and it was always a good getaway from the city I spent many of my childhood summers and holidays here. It was a family past time.…

    My Landlady's Yard

In his essay, “My Landlady’s Yard,” Dagoberto Gilb seems to be writing about a climate and culture that he is both very familiar with and also very fond of, as he is in fact ½ Mexican and lives in Austin, Texas. His landlady seems to be in some form of denial regarding her surroundings, which is evident in her attempt to grow grass and “Yankee” plants in a desert climate. I get the impression that the author is implying that his landlady is a “Yankee” but it is rather indirect so I cannot tell for certain. Through his statement that his landlady wants green grass in the middle of the desert, I think Gilb is implying the Proverb “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence” and by doing so, he is saying that his landlady wants what she can’t have. It makes me wonder if perhaps she had to live in that house at one time and she didn’t want to live there. The author states that she lived there as a young mother and wife. I picture a young woman who is trying to make the most of her domestic imprisonment, living in a place that is very foreign to her, and her attempt of making it feel like home was to plant familiar life, such as the green grass and shrubs that were indigenous to the climate she grew up in. Although there is some sarcasm in the author’s voice, I don’t sense that he is resentful of her. On the contrary, it seems to me that on some level he understands why she has done such a silly thing as to plant this grass and shrubbery out in the desert and is somewhat sympathetic to her. I know as the tenant, he must be obligated to care for the property, but I get the feeling that it goes a bit deeper than that, so he does performs his duty of caring for her property not only out of obligation, but out of sympathy for her. And he does it to his own chagrin, as he is wasting the precious water on this foliage that he knows will not thrive in this…

The war on drugs whether wrong, right, or indifferent, has yielded a plethora of life changing outcomes for many United States citizens. Both the plaintiff and the defendant have their own side of the dispute, and yet somehow the plaintiff in the non-stop ‘cash grab’ that’s so conveniently nicknamed the “War on Drugs” gets the benefit of zero-tolerance, or minimum sentencing. In most cases the defendants simply are doomed from the beginning due to horrible living conditions and lack of jobs in the area. Coupled with police brutality and prejudice pointed toward the African-American community as a whole, it should come as no surprise that in 2011 there were more African-Americans in prison or “under the watch” of the justice system than were enslaved in the United States in 1850. This is not any more a war on drugs than the Iraqi Conflict was a war on the seizure of weapons of mass destruction.…

    A Lucky Day

It was a beautiful Sunday morning, my dad hit upon a sudden idea that he would like us to try something different we have never done before. When hearing that, I couldn’t wait to do something special and funny and expected where Dad was going to take us. With joy and excitement, we kids sang happily and talked cheerfully all the way in the car. When we arrived the quiet and peaceful country with a great view welcoming our visiting, I just felt like I was in a wonderland surrounded with many giant trees, lovely birds, beautiful flowers, and other nature creatures. Of course, I couldn’t miss the good chance of taking pictures of the wonderful scenery. Before long, I heard Dad’s calling not far from me. To my surprise, he was ready to teach me how to catch a fish by giving me a fishing rod. The rivers in the suburbs were so clean and clear that we could see a lot of fish swimming here and there. Actually, it was my first time to try fishing, so I was kind of nervous and excited. As time went by, the longer I waited, the more patience I lost because I got nothing but some plastic bags or let the small fish slip out of my bait. While I was about to give up, the fishing rod in my hand was suddenly shaking hard. Did I catch the big fish? I asked the question in my mind and hoped that my guess was right. Oh, yes, “I got a huuuuuge fish, come over here to help me, Dad! I couldn’t pull it up.” Everybody heard me crying and rushed to the river side to help me pull out the big fish. Everyone in my family was shocked by what I caught. I never thought I was able to get such a pretty big fish. The feeling of catching the first big fish was the same as the feeling of winning the first prize in the lottery game. I thought I was lucky enough because I didn’t have any experience of catching fish. Even though I didn’t get any other surprises from the deep river in the rest time, I was very satisfied with the unexpected harvest. To me, it was a lucky day and it gave me an…
