My Interest In Social Work
I am interested in more than one field of social work. I am interested in children and families due to my underserved upbringing. As an adult, I wish I had someone to advocate for me and my well-being. It would be compelling for me to save a maturing child heartache in their adulthood. Mental health intrigues me not only due to my upbringing but also the correlation of mental health and overall well-being. I had an opportunity where I held a full-time job as staff support inside a state psychiatric hospital. I found this to be one of my most intriguing jobs while completed my college education. As a soldier, a veteran, and a spouse of an active-duty service member, I am immensely attracted to serving my brothers and sisters of the armed force.

In this essay I will discuss how I feel that I have developed personally and professionally as a social work student during the first level of the degree course. I will do this through examination of reflective accounts recorded during the placement learning opportunity. I believe that the use of reflection has been very significant in enhancing my personal skills and learning about my own values. I also believe that the course has instilled me with more self awareness and has given me a better understanding of how I am perceived by others. I have learned that through anti oppressive practice, social workers are able to promote inclusion by challenging discrimination and inequalities. In this essay, I will examine the methods, tools, and techniques that I have learned to date. I will conclude by discussing my particular learning needs and plan for the remainder of the course. The best feeling is helping children with something and watching their faces light up as they discover what they can do all by themselves. While in fourth and fifth grade, I was a part of the buddy program at my school which entailed spending every lunch in the special education classroom at my elementary school. A trait I possess is being sequential and that is useful for the career I want because it will help me with staying organized and grading papers. I am an analyzer, I like to know what is going on around me and love to know how things work. This is a trait that comes in handy with being an elementary school teacher.…

I really liked reading your post. I also thought about working in a private practice setting. I think that working in a small setting, there is a lot more job security. Working in a high-populated setting means that there is a lot of competition in order to progress at work. I love competition, but I really don’t want to be in competition with about twenty-five other social workers. You have a lot of experience. I have barley even been alive for twenty years. I think that your experience will be very useful in social work. At my practicum, I work in a cubical and make dozens of phone calls a day. I rally don’t like to work in a cubical, I love doing field work, its when we visit peoples homes and actually talk to people in their settings. I…

It seems like the nature of the military and the nature of social work are at odds. The violence of the military is a turnoff to many who seek to help individuals through the lens of social work. Joining the military exposed me to a population that had all their physical needs met, but were emotionally left in dire straits. The military population is not equipped more so than civilians to deal with financial hardships, relationship troubles, or other personal battles. These struggles are only compounded by the stress of the military lifestyle that is misunderstood by many who have not served. Academic research and crossing over military with civilian issues, where relevant, is required to interest more social workers in the military.…
