My Internship At UF Health Shands Hospital
An internship provides an opportunity to strengthen a person’s interpersonal and professional skills in a business environment. I completed my internship through UF Health Shands hospital over an 8 week period. I chose this as my place to internship because I was already employed by the hospital and I wanted to show my managerial skills for career advancement opportunities. Since I was already employed by the company, my sponsor gave me tasks outside of my current position. One of these tasks consisted of managing the various vendors responsible for our operating room integration, infant abduction system and audio/visual systems located throughout the hospital. This task was conducted through phone calls and coordinating repairs after hours. I also attended many meetings that my sponsor and supervisor went to throughout each week. I also started shadowing my sponsor on many of the customer service calls that he completed each day.
I had one negative experience that I turned into a positive during my internship and it was during one of my first meetings I attended with my sponsor. My sponsor and director were having a discussion and I interjected my opinion on the situation and they looked at me incredulously. They said I did not understand the issue and that I should

The first positive experience I had was when I was on a service call my sponsor could not get to that was pertaining to a patient being irate over a nurse not being able to hear the patient through the nurse call communication device. The patient was not the most polite person, but I was able to calm the situation by bringing a nurse into his room. Once the nurse arrived I reset the device and had the patient test his nurse call device. The device worked correctly and the patient thanked me and said he was just scared. I was happy I was able to handle that situation the way I did, it could have went much

For my service this year, I was involved with Applecross Opal Nursing Home. Opal age care was a great help to me in opening my eyes to the desperate need for an extra pair of hands and the importance of nursing homes. Not only to the individual admitted in, but also to their families and friends. As I would arrive at 12.00 every time, I would go straight into lending a hand with lunch. Handing out the meals, packing away, cleaning up and keeping an eye on a few of the residents was my first job done. Then I would wonder through the compound talking to the residents, playing and colouring in with them and I would gather and assist them to and from their rooms. With all these jobs, you had to keep a look out for and take extra care with some of the more dependant residents.…

The best part of the internship was shadowing the principal. Like we model for our students, it was good to see a typical day for a principal. While I was not able to shadow for a whole day, I was able to select items that I wanted to participate in. These included attending Board Meetings, Parent Teacher Association, Intervention and Referral Services, IEP/504’s, budget planning, hiring, discipline and supervising sports events. These activities showed what events a principal participant in when they are not observing teachers or attending workshops.…

One of the issues I had was dealing with cognitively impaired patients. I felt like the history I would take sometimes is disconnected and patients tend to leave out things. I rose to solve this by seeking advice from the interns and their solution to my problem was that I should be seeing patients during family visits. This would allow me to gain collateral history and get a picture of the social support the patient has. I realized the importance of having the ability to empathize with patients in order to better understand their…
