My Journey of Faith
My Journey of Faith

Though I have no memory of it, my journey of faith began when I was baptized at St. Michael’s Church in East Longmeadow at three months old. From that point on, I have always been brought up as a Catholic. Prior to the age of twelve, I never really knew much about my faith. My family and I went to mass close to every Sunday, but for me as a young boy it was just simply a point in my day. I did however know the major prayers and understood Jesus, but I still couldn’t make the connections to myself. When I became a teenager, my faith really started to speak more to me. A big part of that was coming to Cathedral for my freshman year of high school. Religion class was a whole new animal for me because before that I attended public school and only had CCD once every month. The switch to Catholic school gave me a whole new perspective on God and I continued to learn more and more about the history of Roman Catholicism. God for me has now become someone who I feel is always watching over me in life and is someone that I can go to in times of need. Personally though I believe that God owes me nothing, but I still pray every night in the hope that if I do well by him, he will do well to me in return. Petruzzelli 2

In my family, everyone for the most part is Catholic. My Dad’s side of the family are all Italian and Irish so being Catholic was a given for them. My mom’s journey however was quite different. Her parents were not Catholic and did not bring them up in the church. Seeing that many of her friends really found comfort in their faith, my mom and my uncle (now Father James) decided to go to church with them and see what it was all about. The two of them still truly believe that their lives changed after that day. Now that my family background has been laid out, the person I’d like to focus on who has impacted my faith is my mom. Because of her late discovery of faith, I think my mom has become more and more increasingly

Although I am a devoted and faithful Catholic as of now, I think that there is always room for improvement. I now know better than to ever put mine or someone else’s thoughts and opinions over the my decision to follow the path that God has set out for me in life. Also, through these words that Mark wrote, I am once again assured that I should never be ashamed or embarrassed of anything that my faith entails, or anything that my faith may influence me to do or say. As long as I have complete faith and trust in God and all that he is capable of, I know that I will live a happy…

My mother always taught me to treat everyone with kindness and respect. She wanted me to know that even if we did not attend Mass every week, that does not mean we should not always act as good Catholics. This is something that I feel has helped me grow stronger in my faith and is something I think about everyday. The reason I only really talk about my mom as having a hand in my early faith development is due to the fact that my parents got divorced and separated when I was around 7 years old. I do not really remember much changing in my life other than I was sad about it for awhile and did not really understand what was happening, but I thought it was cool that now I had two different houses to stay at.…

    15) What were the most important religious events in your family? This was an extremely difficult question for me to answer. The normal person when they were asked this question would say when they were baptized. Myself I was baptized at a extremely young age not by my choice, but of my family choice. When I was discharged from the Navy back in 1982. I lost my mother at an extremely young age. The church that I had been attending splintered into two different factions. Instead of making my own choice of what I wanted to do. I followed my Grandparents and went to the new…

Catholicism has always been the central religion in my family heritage. Each of my family members, originating back to my great grandmother have been raised Roman Catholic. Both on my mother and father’s sides of the family they practice Catholicism. My entire life has been centralized around faith and believing in one God. I attended Catholic School from 2nd to 12th grade and I gained a large amount from the faith filled environment. However, it was not until I was 15 years old that I became fully involved with my relationship with God and practiced Catholicism properly. The reason I became so involved with my relationship with God was because I attended a Catholic Youth Conference in Atlanta, Georgia called, “Steubenville Catholic Youth…

As I was watching the Frontline Video, Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero, I was immediately faced with the question about evil. It is hard to imagine how someone could do something so horrific in the name of religion. So many lives were forever changed during the events that transpired on Tuesday morning, Sept. 11, 2001. As a believer of God, I could certainly identify with the feelings of the people who lost loved ones during the 9/11 tragedy.…

I never thought how interesting it would be to visit a different place of worship besides Christianity. Since the day I was born I’ve been a Christian and whatever anyone else believes in is wrong and that they are going to hell if they don’t believe in Christianity. About 3 years ago I visited the International Buddhist Progress Society a Buddhist temple in Naperville. Buddhism from what I learned looks more like a way of life or guidelines to it rather than a religion. Buddhism tells you how you could live life better but doesn’t scare you with the prospect of hell instead you live with ignorance. My own history with Christianity still made me doubt or fear the conquences of going to this temple. Part of me believed that I be punished by…

Most beliefs that people have come from how they were brought up in life, but those beliefs also become mixed in with the new beliefs they acquire as they get older. I was born into a church going family. Being raised by my grandmother, I have learned many things from her as far as what religion is and what it means to me. We took part in all church activities that were happening throughout the week. Having the teachings from my grandmother as well as what I have learned in the church made allowed me to life my life completely different from where I lived physically. When my grandmother became ill and could not make it to the church anymore, I decided to attend another church that was closer to home and school. I just needed to be in close range to my grandmother and able to get to school by taking the public transportation. I started attending church with the Salvation Army, when within a year I became a soldier for Jesus Christ. This church not only allowed me to be closer to the Lord, but as well as provide my talents that I have in the arts. I was able to bring my love for the Lord through my acting, dancing, and singing. I was able to provide the help that I wanted from my heart by providing meals for the homeless and giving back to my community by serving meals during holidays and giving out gift baskets to families in need. I even taught the teachings from the Lord to the young children in the community as well as teaching the arts to them that will allow them to understand the Lord in different forms of teachings.…

I’m sure that answer would vary from person to person. But for me it was through the saving grace of God that I was able to have faith in God. It wasn’t until I was able to believe that I could be (or was worthy of being) loved that I could begin to understand faith in God. However, once I allowed God to enter my heart that all of my previous conceptions about faith would be changed forever. I associate this time era in my life to the scripture we discussed last week (1 Corinthians 13:11) “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.” Meaning for me that my life before God’s grace I was foolish like a child whereas afterwards (after God’s grace) I was able to begin growing as an adult and learning adult (Godly)…

My journey to my personal salvation and acceptance of Christ as my Lord and savior actually is an interesting story in itself. I was baptized and confirmed as a member of the Baptist Church at the young age of five. I was living in Meridian, Mississippi at the time due to my father being involved in the US Navy and always moving from one base to another. For the next six years of my life, I was truly devoted to the Church and attended every service, event or function that was hosted by the Church. I was eleven years old and back home in my hometown of Detroit, Michigan when my salvation had taken a detour per say.…

Not long ago I was challenged with one of the biggest obstacles of my life and it had to do with my religion. I was raised as a Catholic and I loved my religion but as I grew up I started to have more and more questions about it. Therefore, I just kept my thought to my self but that made me grow farther apart from my church and…
