My Minimum Wage Job
First, something big needs to be recognized. No matter what decision I follow through with on the prompt, there are going to be serious negative repercussions. I will focus primarily on cutting my losses, and doing what is best for myself and my child. Because the only job available to me is a minimum wage job, and there is no mention of a living wage law being present in this scenario, I would go on welfare. I am a single parent and it is my duty to be around in raising that child. The child deserves a dad who is present in every aspect of his/her development: not a father working a full-time job, having the stresses of living from paycheck to paycheck. I understand there is a lot of social stigma associated with receiving welfare, and I am willing to give up my pride for the sake of my child. Depending on the establishment I would have worked for my minimum wage job, there is a legitimate chance that wage theft is something I would have had to worry about. The …show more content…
During my time on welfare, I would constantly be searching for jobs that could support my family situation. As fast as the decision was to get on welfare, I would want to get off it even quicker. Socially, I would be an outcast. Turning that stigma into motivation would be my main focus. The last thing I want to do is be financially dependent off the backs of other hardworking citizens, so I would make sure that my welfare was spent appropriately. If I were using my food stamps (SNAP), I know people’s reactions around me would be mortifying, and I would have to emotionally prepare myself for social backlash. In order for me to choose the other option, getting a job paying minimum wage, I would have to get a

I understand that some do need government assistance and that being on welfare is beneficial to those that really do need the help. I know that in order to get a good paying job you have to have an education, which for those that live in poverty can seem like something that is completely out of reach and impossible to obtain. I also believe that if you try and work hard enough you can accomplish anything. There will be tough times, but you have to go through this in order to get to the point that you want to be at. In the article Barbara Ehrenreich takes on a low wage job, something that a lot of people have to…

The article, “Too Poor to Parent?” by Gaylynn Burroughs really caught my attention in so many ways. I never looked at foster care how I look at it now. Many women children are being taken away from them from poor parenting. Although, there are mother who try their hardest to provide for their children and they still have to get their children taken away from them due to one mistake that they have made. That one mistake can lead them to never seeing their children or even having custody to their children every again. Child welfare workers take children from their parents all the time. Especially from school, day care or a friend house without notifying their parents (573). I had no clue that child welfare workers can take children from any location…

The original idea of the United States Social Welfare System that was prompted in the 1930s due to the Great Depression, was that it would be a temporary program used to help those who recently became unemployed to get back on their feet. In a recent article by Hope yen of the Huffington Post, "Four out of 5 U.S. adults struggle with joblessness, near-poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives, a sign of deteriorating economic security and an elusive American dream." If you look at it more closely 114.8 million families as of 2010 depend on welfare compared to 4.5 million families in 1996. The United States government should restructure the existing qualifications and regulations for any current and future dependents seeking assistance from government-funded programs due to the increasingly high rate of chemical dependency, financial instability, and fraud within the programs.…

Many people feel it’s not fair that these "illegals" are receiving federal and state benefits that they don't deserve. When this child is born, the child automatically receives many benefits if he/she is an anchor baby. Their parent is illegal and cannot work and so they apply for food stamps and many other governmental programs. These anchor babies are a burden on schools, hospitals, taxpayers, and so on. "If there's abuse in the system where , pregnant women are coming in to have babies simply because they can do it, then there ought to be greater enforcement," Said President Bush "That's [the] legitimate side of this. Better enforcement so that you don't have these, you know, 'anchor babies,' as they're described, coming into the country."…

The welfare system has been infamously labeled as a "free money system" for unmotivated women with children they no longer wish to care to raise. This social stigma has burdened those who truly need government support to survive and get back on their feet. Ironically, welfare does very little to help woman move up the social latter, forcing women to seek alternative sources of income, housing, child-care,…

The existence of food stamps generally help a lot of people, most especially those who could not fend for themselves. However, giving out such food stamps does not come out without any issues. These food stamps or rather reductions in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) had been a subject of debate in 2013 between the Republicans and Democrats.…

Welfare is nothing new to the citizens of this country. It is a concept that arose over a century ago. Welfare was made famous by Bill Clinton, in 1996, and it has brought up much controversy. Arguments suggest the welfare system is highly abused by its members while others believe it is the answer to the nation’s poverty. Although the welfare system is state regulated, many people believe it is taken advantage of by underserving people. Often, people with nasty habits, sale their food stamp cards for extra cash, cigarettes, and drugs. Most of the time, these people have children that have to go without because their parent puts their government assistance towards unhealthy addictions.…

    Does Welfare Feel Ashamed

    • 309 Words

Welfare was created in 1935 to provide for the families in need of food, clothing, and shelter, but today it has become a large, controversial topic. Some people argue that it is ridiculous that some people can’t take care of themselves and must rely on everyone else’s money to support them. Those people cause those on welfare to become ashamed of themselves. I believe people on welfare should not feel ashamed because some do hold a job if not multiple, but still cannot provide for themselves and others have certain disabilities that restrict them from getting a job and supporting themselves.…

The SNAP program helps low-income people buy the food they need for good health. State public assistance agencies run the program through their local offices. The amount of SNAP benefits you can get is based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Thrifty Food Plan, which is an estimate of how much it costs to buy food to prepare nutritious, low-cost meals for your household .The estimate is changed every year to keep up with food prices.…

However, if we are able to reach some of those that are living in poverty or just above the poverty line the program has succeeded for many. SNAP helps the poorest of Americans: almost 90% of SNAP households live below the poverty line, and about 40% of SNAP households have incomes less than half of the poverty line (approximately $9,155 for a family of three) (SNAP to health). It also makes a huge impact on children that are in severe poverty and at risk for malnutrition. In order to be productive people need to be able to meet their nutritional needs they also need to be able to keep from becoming sick. According to the White House report on the benefits of SNAP, in 2014, 44 percent of all SNAP households were households with children.…

When a program consist of this many people there’s always going to be someone that messes it up or the entire group. “Supporters have argued for decades that requiring welfare recipients to take drug tests helps ensure that the government assistance is going to people who truly need it rather than supporting those who use illegal drugs”(Welfare Drug Testing 1), but the government is facing many hurdles to do so. “Welfare drug testing efforts have faced legal challenges from recipients who argue that such test violate the fourth amendment of the U.S. constitution which bans “ ‘ Unreasonable searches and seizures’ “(Welfare Drug Testing 1).This is outrageous though, that people can cry and call help for all the help they need, but as soon as they need to actually do something for these benefits all of the peoples mind set change from “I’ll do whatever it takes” to “I’m not doing that”. It should be known that once the government starts to give you money to live, that there should be no doubt you take a drug test for these benefits. The government doesn’t have to help you but they want to, so why fight them on this matter? The recipients that fight and fight over this controversial topic are the ones that don’t think their rights are being violated but the ones that are afraid that if this were to happen that they would lose their benefits. Why fight it unless you’re breaking the law…

Welfare’s Pitfalls Are Creating A Problem in America Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a welfare system that was supportive of all? One that provided assistance to anyone experiencing crisis. Because America is not a communist government, there will always be poverty because some people are always going to be at the top, and some people are always going to be at the bottom, but the bottom does not have to be as bad as it is now. America is the land of opportunities, and there is always a chance to better yourself even if the odds are against you. It has taken many years for someone in a higher level to actually take action on this issue, but changes are starting to be made. The governor of Maine, Paul LePage, made history when he changed the welfare laws of Maine. As Arthur Browne stated, in the US Herald, “They are making people exhaust their possibilities for employment before giving them a handout” (Browne). This is exactly what the rest of America needs to do because the proof is in the pudding and his method works. Some people may argue that this movement is harshly targeting the lower class in rural areas; it is not to attack these people, but to better them because they are having difficulty bettering themselves. According to Jason DeWitt, “ Now that the individuals have to complete either twenty hours of part-time work in a week, volunteer for at least twenty-four hours per month, or get involved in a vocational program, the amount of SNAP recipients has dramatically dropped from 12,000 to approximately 2,500 by the end of March – a nearly 80% reduction in welfare”…
