My Personal Interest Project
The Internet is a growing space with infinite potential, yet we must question the truth and reliability of some things. Sherry Turckle, author of Together Alone quoted a subject of hers as saying “When things happen in real-time that’s it you have to show emotion and have quick responses, there is not more time left to think”

My personal interest project (Henceforth referred to as PIP) is an investigation into the desire to create an online pseudo and the impact it is having on people’s social skills across a range of social situations. My first idea was to study the affect of vaccinations in society but that changed when my interest in social identity grew.

The initial idea began when during conversation the topic of ‘fake’ people on the Internet was brought up and the conversation wound its way into the desire to change your identity and how that can effect the first time you meet someone face-to-face and they realise you are not the sock puppet you resonated to be via the internet. After thought on that idea, I became interested in what drove an increasing amount of people to alter themselves on the Internet and the comparison between reactions in people in a situation online and the same situation in ‘real-time’. The way peoples minds work, and the reasoning behind decision making has always intrigued me and I now have a chance to explore it in depth.

This research idea resonates with the topic Change and Continuity within the Society and Culture syllabus. It explores the changing uses of technology on social and cultural practices and traditions.

The primary methodologies I am using include; Interviews with professors studying similar concepts consisting mainly of open-ended questions, Focus groups to collect primary information on the comparison of effects in regard to different social situations, Questionaries to enable me to collect a range of answers for general questions and personal reflection which allows me to include my own experiences

Both face-to-face interaction and social networking sites (including Myspace, Twitter, and Facebook) are forms of staying in contact with friends and family. While Nora from Turkle’s “Alone together” communicates her engagement and wedding date via email to her closest friends and family, she could have easily announced it face-to-face, at a party or through a Facebook event. While there are many ways of communicating information, the authenticity of these interactions as well as its importance is up for debate. For Turkle, face-to-face interaction is to social networking as the tortoise is to the robot: some can be moved by authenticity of the tortoise (face-to-face interaction) while others may find “a shame to bring the turtle all this way from its island home in the Pacific...[when] they could have used a robot.”(Turkle, 265) To be authentic is to be “accurate in representation of the facts; trustworthy; reliable”. It is an attribute that according to Turkle can only be found in face-to-face interactions. In calling social networks "a deliberate performance that can be made to seem spontaneous,” she adds another dimension to the definition for authenticity: spontaneity. Turkle finds that face-to-face interactions is marked by spontaneity, allowing you “to be upset in front of someone else” as opposed to giving you the time to compose your thoughts and thus hide your true feelings. (Turkle, 264) Ironically, Turkle’s notion of authenticity is more readily apparent in social networking than in face-to-face interaction; by giving control and fostering transparency, social networking builds more authentic relationships and diminishes the need for face-to-face interaction.…

In this article there are several examples of how the use of the web, as well other types or media, such as IM, FB and Instagram have changed the way people thinks. One example is a person who says “Texting and IMing my friends gives me a constant feeling of comfort,” a University of Maryland student wrote after being asked to refrain from using electronic media for a day. “When I did not have those two luxuries, I felt quite alone and secluded from my life.” (Greenblatt, 2010)…

“The use of texting and Facebook and Twitter and other sites as a form of communication is eroding people’s ability to write sentences that communicate real meaning and inhibit the art of dialogue,” Saunders Medlock says. “It also allows people to communicate without ever seeing each other or hearing a voice, and this has a…

In addition, Rachel Kadish says that "There's something glorious and terrible about a world in which a picture of one's face can sweep around the globe this way, part of a human chorus changing us for better or worse" (Kadish, 262). Indeed, it is true that the internet tends to have almost as many bad things as there are good. People in real life are constrained by their face to face…

Rosen then makes the connection from online identity to online communities. She notes what characterizes these online communities, depends on a number of things. Age, demographics, location and, pastimes. She states that today’s social networking sites organize themselves around the “person,” how we define ourselves online with millions of individual profiles that list interests, hobbies and the things that are important to us. She also explains how these online communities have affected our relationships in the real world. She gives the example of two users who announced their engagement over Facebook and the repercussions both on and offline when they announced it was not going to happen.…

On September 8th 1990, it was a hot sunny day in the city of Cali, Colombia. Temperature around 88°F with very low humidity, normal for that time of year, since the summer was about to begin. A sky full of altocumulus clouds cooled the estimated population of about 1.7 million people ("1990 population estimate for Cali, Colombia."). Among that population there was my mother. Already late for her gynecology appointment, inconveniently causes by a car accident, she would shortly find out when I would be entering the world. The accident turned a 20-minute drive in a 45-minute drive. Rushing into the clinic, as the doctor’s assistant was calling her name, she rapidly was taken to the back to speak with the provider. When the doctor came into the room he calmly said, “I have good news, and bad news”. My mom’s heart already racing she decided to go with the bad news first. “The probability of being a complicated birth is pretty high, which means the surgical team will have to perform a cesarean section instead of a vaginal birth”. My mother relived thinking it would be something much worse she asked the doctor to go ahead with the good news. “The baby will probably be arriving today”. My mom became frantic, “that’s the good news? They might as well both have been bad! My mother panicked, she had nothing ready for the birth, since her first child was not due for another 10 days. Her hormone levels raging at an all time sky high, she shortly began to cry. The doctor and his staff hugged her and reassured her that everything was going to be ok. They quickly rushed her to the hospital where they would have all the equipment in the event that there were any major complications. Once she was all settled in, the operating room staff started to prepare for the birth around 3:15 P.M. The staff thought I was ready to come out, however I took another three hours to make my grand appearance. At 6:23 PM I arrived spreading my arms and legs with a…

Social media a toxic environment where humans, hide themselves behind a false identity to hurt one another and can get away with it. Turkle describes how technology has affected human interaction by providing a space to hide from the real world. Turkle writes, “We re-create ourselves as online personae in games or virtual worlds and give ourselves new bodies, homes, jobs, and romances” (Turkle 494). Turkle explains how technology allows humans to create a virtual reality that become a reality for them. In fact, when a human is affected by their virtual reality it is dangerous because they forget part of the real world. For instance, the awareness of how words can hurt another, persons emotions. This happens a lot where people do not realize the harm they cause online but there is also those that…

Children are kept track of by their parents using cell phones and vice versa. They use the term “Pathology” as if needing to have a cell phone is NOT pathology, “but an accommodation to what technology affords.” (435) Another thing Turkle refers to is “THE AVATAR OF ME”. The term “Avatar” (436), it’s just like the game The Sims Online, is where you can create a virtual self. It’s a virtual place where you can live without really living. It helps people detach from real life. “This kind of identity work can take place wherever you create an avatar.” (437) People create a “Persona” for themselves, not only as an avatar, but on their own personal online profiles, such as facebook. Children as young as 13 are making these online profiles and altering them the way they want to be. They use this all the way into applying for colleges. “Creating the illusion of authenticity demands virtuosity.” (439) Using these methods of communicating and making yourself who and what you want to be is what our generation does, virtually. Person to person has turned into texting instead of in person conversations. It may be a freer way of being who you want to be, but it might not exactly be who you…
