The first of my three philosophies, respect myself as well as others, is as simple as it sounds. I believe with self respect comes self pride; without self-respect how can we expect others to take us seriously? Taking pride in your appearance, attitude, and one’s own character helps to shape others perceptions about an individual. One quote that always assist me in being mindful of others is, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” (Maya Angelou) Respect for others and what’s important to them can have a tremendous affect on someone’s life. I have learned so much about respecting others from my experiences in the military. On a day-to-day basis I often have to show professional respect not only to my superiors but also to subordinates.
Taking life and those important people in our lives for granted often becomes a reality only when something unexpected or tragic happens. As human beings we all can attest to some level of selfishness when it comes to socialization and human interaction. Technological conveniences are constantly being developed to promote an individual existence. We email instead of writing letters by hand. We send text messages instead of picking up the phone and listening to each other's voices. And some of us eschew communication altogether in favor of other forms of private entertainment.
