My Philosophy Of Counseling

A career that I have thinking about and pushed me to join psychology is counselling. Something that I have always wanted to do was to become a high school counselor. I believe that high school is a key part of a person’s life and an available strong guidance counselor is essential. A strong guidance counselor can lead a highschool kid on the right track and this is me speaking from experience. A career path I never thought about going on but I see is similar to counselling is coaching. I believe that coaching is basically counselling but with a sport included. I believe this is true mostly because I have coached and I have watched movies like Coach Carter. For these specific career choices I need to have strong verbal skills and understanding
My values assessment tell me that I value helping others and helping society. Therefore, understanding that counselling is to help someone that is in need of guidance I think my values and career go hand in hand. I believe that if a person’s values tie in with their career field it will allow room for more success and drive. For both coaching and counselling you aim to guide the people you’re working with to new heights and a clean path. When I was a sophmore in highschool I was a coach for a basketball team in San Francisco. It was then that I learned you can change undisciplined kids with talent into respectable men of the game and in society. Using my personality assessment I can see that I am observant, open minded, and enthusiastic. These personality traits of mine allow me to comfort and push people to thrive and understand what it is that they need help on. When I was in high school because of my skills and personality it led a lot of my friends to seeking guidance and comfort from me.
