Because of this, I am able to participate in organizations like the National Honor Society that will allow me to take leadership, as vice president, in planning events such as Relay for Life and Coat and Food drives. Through these events, not only I but all students are able to contribute to the well being of others. Which allow students to become involved with their community.

Additionally, I want to give back to my community before graduating from this college. This would include making positive changes, if needed, throughout the community. I want to create an environment in which students and teachers gain a feeling of jubilation upon walking through the campus. This may seem like a small act, but in fact this is a very substantial idea. If I am accepted, I will try to create opportunities in which other students will be able to take part in building their leadership skills through service as well as involving students more. I want to become a part of community service clubs at Pitzer so I can be surrounded by people who have the same aspirations. Currently, I am involved in multiple activities which give back to my community. I enjoy helping others and enjoy seeing others do the same. 1. When I think of what I can contribute to the university to community, I begin to look at what the university is all about. Florida A M University is all about warmth and acceptance. It’s all about driving students from all walks of life to perform to the best of their capabilities. There all about welcoming African American students and encouraging them to pursue greater heights. My only wish is that I will be given a chance to contribute even in the smallest of way, in helping the university keep its reputation and the prestige it deserves. Doing so is not an impossible task for I believe that simply being myself will be a contribution itself. I honestly believe that I am strong enough to face the multiple challenges that will come along the way as I pursue my…

As a particularly curious and proactive member of society, I consider myself to be civically engaged; although the degree of engagement can be argued. Personally, I believe that small things make up the larger picture, so my engagement is mostly interpersonal, as small interactions can set of chain reactions. Speaking out on issues with (or to) friends, politely engaging strangers in conversations and presenting different points of view, and constantly seeking to better myself is how I remain aware and knowledgeable on current issues, and also how I continue to learn new things and refine my thoughts. Not everyone is born to take center stage, and so we must all strive to do what we can, even if it’s simply a few words of encouragement or a…

In “Engaged Pedagogy” the first chapter of “Teaching to Transgress: Education as a practice of Freedom” bell hooks walks us through her philosophy of pedagogy with a chapter that manages to serve as a powerful introduction to her book. In chapter one, Hooks manages to introduce her view on pedagogy, her inspirations and her experiences within the academia as a student and a professor and how it helped formulating her philosophy. In the first part of the chapter, Hooks introduces “Engaged Pedagogy” by noting that education as a practice of freedom is a way that anyone can learn, given that they believe the role of the teacher isn’t merely just to share knowledge but to make education a much deeper experience where students can get to grow intellectually…

Community service is a requirement needed to graduate from a Prince George’s County school, with the idea it has peaked interest in giving back to the community. While doing community service, I have learned the importance of giving back to the community and helping out in ways I never thought to do. My plan when I become successful in life is to start my own charity or community service team. The goal is to give back to people in need in ways that include clothes, shelter, food, and even services elderly cannot do for themselves. My team would be comprised of high schoolers around the area in need of service hours.…
