In America, standardized testing has become a prevalent method for testing the educational ability of students. Tests such as the SAT for College and the California STAR for elementary and junior high students have been administered since the beginning of the 20th century. These tests are often considered by many as crucial for the academic progression of students into further education, such as an elementary student being promoted from third to fourth grade or a high school senior applying to college. However, standardized tests have setbacks which could jeopardize a student’s future academic progression given he/she fails to pass. Therefore, I believe standardized tests are ineffective at measuring a student’s capabilities and hence interfere with true academic learning.…

Now in today’s society and learning environment this form of testing is hurting our students more than ever. Teachers and students alike are carrying the burden of these tests, ruining the educational system. These tests break students down into drones only focusing on this one, or sometimes multiple, tests that could determine the rest of their adult lives.…

Mrs Peters announces, “You have fifteen minutes to study. As soon as the timer goes off I will hand out the test and talking will not be permitted or it will be an automatic office referral and a 0% on the test.” I begin to panic because I realize that as soon I look in my folder for my notes to study over, I realize that I left them on my kitchen counter. This makes me feel even worse about the situation. Now, I was sure that I wouldn't be able to do well on the test. I think at least I didn’t forget my calculator. I wait until the timer goes off. Mrs. Peters begins to hand out the tests and I start to dread how well I will do. I then am handed my test. I look through the test and recognize some problems that I know how to do. I read through the test and begin to work out and evaluate problems. I am beginning to get distracted by the quietness of the classroom and listening to the tapping, the clicking of the clock, and cough or sneeze every now and then. After I begin to get off topic I always remind myself to get back to work and to try to focus. I begin to near the end of my test. I feel pretty confident that I am doing pretty well. I did not expect this feeling. Then, I finish up, look over the test one more time, and I raise my hand so that my test can be collected. Mrs. Peters comes by and takes my test and gently smiles at me and pats me on the back. I sit and wait until everyone finishes their tests. Soon, everyone…
As many tests as students have to take, there are some people that are simply just poor test-takers. They may be extremely brilliant in the classroom, interacting and applying the material, but when it comes to tests, they don’t perform well. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but what happens when an incredible student fails a future-determining test, and is forced to attend a community college, rather than attending Harvard, for example, and isn’t able to expand their horizons, and apply their knowledge where they deserve to be? How’s it possible that one test can make or break a…
As a result, these factors often cause students to be stressful and even anxiety before and during the test. Furthermore, standardized testing can also taken advantage of. Cheating is something many people choose to during tests to achieve high…
