Free verse poetry uses rhythm, word choice, imagery and other devices to reflect the subject of the poem with a unique style. The aesthetic of Hopkins’ writing is not the only influence to my writing, the content in her stories is also very well thought out and interesting. After reading many of her books, they inspired me strive to create stories as touching as hers. Her stories had meaning behind them, they felt as if they were more than just words on a page to me, even if I could not relate to anything she wrote about on a personal level. Creative writing is a challenging and daunting task for me. In my own writing, I excel when it comes to research papers, as my grade usually reflects. It is easier for me to write about facts and statistics, rather than create something of my own. The Norton Field Guide to Writing states, “Often your stance is affected by your genre: for example, lab reports require an objective, unemotional stance that emphasizes the content and minimizes the writer’s own attitudes”(Bullock et al. 13). This makes it difficult for me to write creatively at times because incorporating my own thoughts and feelings into papers is not something that comes easily to me, and a lot of that problem stems from my inspiration to write. A writer’s voice can be difficult to find, and it takes time to learn what a specific voice sounds like as a writer. It could take a whole lifetime for a writer to figure out what their voice is. It is not limited to any genre of writing, and can be found throughout any format. The voice a person writes with is unique to them and their writing style. Unlike an author’s voice, an author’s stance changes based on what kind of paper they are writing, and how they feel about the paper they are writing. Ellen Hopkins’ voice and stance in her writing is unique, which is why she is the most prominent influence on my writing. She is the inspiration behind some of my best papers so far, and will continue to be an inspiration to me as a writer. There are other examples of my writing that I could say contributed to my writing technique and my voice, everything that I have ever written has contributed at least something to my style and personality in writing, but Ellen Hopkins has had the largest impact on my writing style. I may not have found my voice yet, or I may have found it awhile ago without realizing it, but I know for sure that my writing has improved in the process of looking for it. As I write, it will continue to improve and get better, and the voice in my writing will continue to get stronger and more prominent as well, whether I realize it or
