Jodie prepared her favorite shirt the night before, a cotton shirt with a world map printed across the front. Matching it with blue jeans and a pair of black Converse, she dons her outfit and hops down the stairs. Once at the kitchen table, Jodie pulls out her phone to check the time. Realizing she’s running late, she scarfs down her cereal, hugs her parents, and rushes out the door.

The boy sits down next to her, chuckling quietly to himself.
Class begins as Mr. Jones hands out the syllabus for the year. Jodie takes note of the chapters and writes down what to study later in notebook, and her seatmate gives her a strange look.
“What could you possibly be writing down? He hasn’t even said anything yet,” a whisper travels to Jodie’s ear.
“Just a note,” she says, reciprocating the same tone of the voice. Accepting the answer, the boy goes back to looking around the room while Mr. Jones explains what they will be learning in the next two semesters. Jodie diligently writes down key chapters that he says will be important on the final, as well as pages he recommends for studying. The bell rings and she packs up her belongings, in order of size, of course, and carries them in her arms.
“What a model student you are,” the boy teases her.
“I suppose,” Jodie shrugs, walking away. While stepping out of the room, she feels a tap on her shoulder. Turning around, she meets the eyes of the boy. Becoming annoyed, she sighs and asks “What?”
