Narrative Essay: Maius The Chaser
Maius X
98 BCE
Today brought a hard and trying battle. I fought a strong but predictable secutor, or “chaser”. Being a retiarius or “net-man” I was equipped with a rete, a weighted net hemp net; a pugio, a dagger; and a fuscina or tridens, a three pronged spear. I also have a piece of armour called a galerus that protected my head and neck but did not limit my head movements. The secutor I challenged was armed with a long shield and shortsword. He wore a helmet with a visor, but I could see his bloodthirsty eyes staring at me. When the gates open I went into a defensive position where I could quickly leap away if I had to. The secutor charged at me, yelling a blood curdling battle cry. I darted away and slashed at him with my dagger when he was

I couldn’t see the secutors face, but I could tell he was smirking smugly. He said to me in a low whisper that stank of ash (as some gladiators drank a potion made of plant ash that strengthened bones) “Just know that you won’t be the first to fall to Titus Sulinus”. Those arrogant words brought fire back into me and I sprang up and slashed with my dagger. It caught him in the shoulder, and he gave a grunt of surprise. It was his turn to fall to his knees, but only for a fleeting moment. He used his time to sprint as well as he could to the other side of the ring. I unravelled my rete from were it was held on my wrist. I swung it around once to straighten it out. I narrowed my eyes, aimed my rete, and threw the weighted net at Titus. It spiraled into the air, springing into a flying circle just like it was designed to do. The rete fell onto Titus and caught him in a rough, tangled mess of rope.I sprinted towards him, I was not going to let this chance go by. I skidded to a halt by his side and tightened the rete. He looked so fearful that I made his end very quick. A fast movement with my fuscina at his throat and he was no more. I couldn’t believe it, I had won! I had won before of course, but never

The Hero’s Journey is a common template of how a tale/story about a hero will go. It usually involves a hero that goes on a journey/adventure and defeats/solves something and comes home changed/transformed. It was the American scholar Joseph Campbell that introduced this concept. Spiderman is one of many heroes that follow this outline.…

"You're going to lose, princess, there’s no way you can take down a son of Ares, ” you heard the boy in front of you boast as he drew his sword. You narrowed your eyes and waited for him to come after you before you started your plan. He lunged, making you step to the side casually as if his attack was nothing. ‘Clumsy fighter, maybe I can trick him into going into a vulnerable position,’ you thought as he went to slash your throat. You dodged to the side and quickly dropped to the ground and roundhouse kicking him on the left leg.…

A scene that I disagree on was how Adam handled the situation of getting into the ICU to see how Mia was doing. What Adam did was he and Kim came up with a plan to try and sneak into the ICU by distracting the nurse and security grads. In my opinion what should have been done was since only family members were allowed to visit her Adam could have asked to be watched at all times during the visit by the security grads.A short passage from the book that I found meaningful was when Adam came inside to see Mia; he tried to help her with the decision of staying or leaving. This short passage was significant to me because it led to the development of the theme, love could never be broken apart no matter what the situation is, it will always be there. With the love and support that her boyfriend Adam gave her it made her more…

Tom wondered for what seemed to be the millionth time why Dectives were required to dress like wall-street bankers or stock analysts. At least that was the expectation in public, however the moment he had the office to himself, he unknotted his tie, slipped off the linen suit jacket, and undid the top button of his shirt, then sat back in his chair, raised his eyes to the ceiling, and tapped the tip of a ballpoint pen against his teeth. That was Tom's usual mode of concentration and contemplation, and so intent was the man's focus on the new case that all else slipped from his mind, even the recollection that he'd texted his wife. Therefore, the sudden familiar sound of her voice, accompanied by the enticing aroma of barbecue, startled him, and he immediately shot upright. The sight of Lila elicited a smile that only widened with the greeting and kiss. "Sorry baby."…

In every hero's journey that I read in the past the heroes has to be a male there is never a female hero, Joseph Campbell talked a little bit about the heroine, which is a female hero, and most people don't relays that women also can be heroes, the thing that caught my attention in Katniss the main hero in the hunger game movie series is that she was a great example of a hero not because it was the only hero journey move that we watched in this class that included a female hero. in the hanger game even though the hero was a girl but she was a great example of a hero she was a hero by the sense of the word, she wasn't only a great fighter in front of a strong males she also volunteered for her little sister that got chosen in the first place in an act of heroic self-sacrifice, one of the main roles of the game is that it…

There was a moment of silence in the shambles, and all the orcs were dead or had fled. Boromir looked around the fellowship: the four hobbits seemed ruffled but fortunately unharmed, while Gandalf and that ranger were in a state so disheveled that it was difficult not to laugh. The pain at the back of his head made him grimace. Well, I must look just as bad, he thought and then turned to the elves standing silently at the rear.…

The enemy army fell into a chant, it seemed to be coming from all sides; we soon found out that it was. They had split their force into three groups to surround us each group with as many troops as our entire army. Their berserkers lead the charge while the rest of their men threw javelins and axes. We all looked to our general for orders only to find that an axe had split his skull open. Panic spread like wildfire, some charged, some fled and the rest stood in shock. I lost my train of thought and simply watched blank faced. A faster berserker had outrun the rest of his army and bashed down Siegfried with the side of a battle axe. He lay in the mud bloody faced and begged, tears filling his eyes. I had never seen a face so full of fear. I couldn't hear what he said, I couldn't hear anything, but I saw what happened next. The berserker slammed his axe down on Siegfried's neck and pulled his head from his body. I had heard that when someone is decapitated they remain conscious for ten seconds. My eyes met Siegfried's. He was confused, then terrified and then he was gone. Bjorn was locked in combat, I wanted to help but I couldn't make myself move. Another fighter was moving in on his back. I couldn't move. He raised his sword. I couldn't move. He cleaved off Bjorn's arm. Tears ran down my face and I couldn't move. He looked at me, his face was screwed up in pain but I could see his eyes saying one thing to me, "You are a coward". Men encircled him and skewered him with their spears. I could move, I moved away and left my friends to be slaughtered. Blood and rain fell in equal portions. I threw down my weapons and ran as fast as I could. Red faced and sobbing I ran. By the end of the ordeal I was right about one thing I had left my friends as a feast for the…

All I ever wanted to do was to see where I came from. I have spent my entire life working on a time machine to send me to 1919 and back. The time machine was modeled after a car with rockets. How you get the car able to time travel is you have to get the car going 100 miles per hour, then you push a button, and then where you want to go. When it was time to test it out I brought it to the highway and got it going 100 miles per hour, pushed the button, and thought where and when I wanted to go, it didn't work. I brought it back to the garage where I was working on it and figured out that I didn't connect the button. I brought the car back to the highway got it going 100 miles per hour, pushed the button, and thought where and when I wanted to…
