Narrative Uses Of Pathani Samanta Planetarium, Bhubaneswar
2.5.11 Pathani Samanta Planetarium, Bhubaneswar

Integrating modern day audio visual technology with advanced researches on outer space objects, the new age Space science education has an innovative means of imparting the knowledge namely through planetariums. The first thing that comes to mind upon hearing the word, is the replica of the dark glittering sky with a horde of objects moving by us to create an effective and lasting impression of the Universe.
Pathani Samanta Planetarium had a similar effect on the residents of Bhubaneswar while commencing its first show. The installation

When you first walk into the Space Odyssey you are amazed it almost looks as thought your walking on to a spaceship or what I would imagine it to be like. When you go thought the entrance you walk into a very long white tunnel with different colored lights all around you. The first exhibit we seen when we emerged from the tunnel was a very lager replica of the earth rotating around and also it look to be tilted my guess to represent the 23 1/2 tilt that the earth has. The next exhibit we seen was the recreation of the surface of mars or more specifically the Candor Chasma Canyons with 15,000 foot cliffs. The last exhibit we looked at before we had to go into the show was of a museum host talking about the Kuiper belt which is kind of like a asteroid belt but instead of being all rock, ice and metal the Kuiper belt is mostly frozen methane, ammonia and water.…

Telescopes are one of the greatest inventions and have led scientists on a fantastic journey of getting closer to understanding the universe. There is no way to research and evaluate outer space without telescopes gathering all of the information that they do. This paper is going to discuss the science of telescopes and explain all of the elements relative to them.…

When we were born, we did not know how vast the world really is, we were convinced that this Earth was the center, the only place in this world. However, growing up we come to accept that Earth is just a piece of the infinite universe, and one might even say Earth is not even an atom compared to the cosmos. It took humans thousands of years to discover the reaches of the Earth, we finally were able to capture the whole planet and create a map of Earth. Yet the universe out there is much larger and it is still continually growing bigger. We could only try to observe and study the movements in space from our own planet in order to further our understanding of the universe. Through astronomy, we hoped to find the many mysteries and properties of the world.…

In recent years, human culture has been full of writers, directors, and story tellers alike who have been creating fearful tales of outer space; idealizing it as an eternal abyss where you are completely alone with no hope or salvation. giving the idea that if it's not from this planet then “it almost does not matter where they come from” (Fast 158). Instead we should see it as a new frontier of development; an endless span of time and space waiting to be discovered. Yet we still remain here on a tiny planet, examining space as…

Most of the the things we know about space today is thanks to the telescope. With telescopes we can see things far off in other galaxies such as Supernovas and other planets that could possibly sustain life. Using the Kepler Space Telescope, astronomers have discovered the first Earth-sized planet orbiting a star in the…

As I entered the observatory I knew I would come home with information I had never knew about. There where so many things to touch and look at. I wanted to spend every minute observing the displays. The walls and the ceilings have large beautiful murals painted all along the ceiling, like something from a cathedral in Rome. I was told, they were created to show the connection between science and mythology, as well as the connection between the earth and the sky. There were even murals of all the Astronomers who helped develop Griffith’s idea. The center of the building included a large Pendulum, which was a device used to measure the earth’s rotation. It was the observatories main attraction and had required perfect creation in order for it to be exact. As everyone was gathered around this object, we wondered how it worked. At the bottom of the floor was a measuring device with domino like blocks rotating around it. It worked in the strangest way I can imagine, as the ball moved back and forth it would knock down the blocks according to…

During my practicum I observed a 5th grade science class that was studying the solar system. The class began with the teacher asking the students what they know about the solar system. Many students raised their hands and responded to the question when called on. After a few minutes of inquiring the teacher proceeded to show the students the solar system using the Solar System Scope on the Smart board. The classroom environment was filled with anticipation of actually getting to see what the solar system looks like. The students enjoyed seeing and feeling the effect of being in space where they could get a closer look at the planets. It was great to see a lot of enthusiastic and eager students. After showing the students how the solar system…

The Greek mathematician, Archimedes, is credited with inventing celestial spheres in the form of a model that are the foundation for what is today called a planetarium. A planetarium is a geocentric model of the solar system that shows the positions of the sun, moon, and planets as viewed from the earth at various times. The positions of the heavenly bodies may be indicated through the relative positions of small spheres representing the bodies, as was achieved in Archimedes' planetarium. Modern planetariums project images of the heavenly bodies onto a large hemisphere in whose interior observers are situated. It is thought Archimedes created a mechanical model which shows the motions of the sun, moon, and planets as viewed from the earth.…

It informed the reader of how from space exploration, motivated change for the earth’s future and the statistics of the space programs now.…

Edwin Hubble was an extraordinary scientist, who helped create a space telescope that contributed to multiple discoveries and grew our understanding of the universe. The Hubble Space Telescope was and is an absolutely critical aspect to astronomy because it helped make many amazing discoveries in science. This space telescope explored places and objects, we never knew existed and it explained the answers to questions we never thought we’d have the answers too. The hubble space telescope is extremely important because it advanced our knowledge of space and the universe.…

The work of an astrophysicist is long and strenuous, but fascinating nonetheless. Their cardinal focus as an astrophysicist is research and development of scientific devices and equipment. The research involves studying the skies for extra-terrestrial sources, which also encourages the use of telescopes, gauges, and other devices. When they find a potential “puzzle piece” to the origin of the universe, they research these phenomena to analyze their data and statistics. Once completed, they plot and evaluate their results to present them to the public. Astrophysicists can work at high schools/colleges, industrial laboratories, or the federal government, making their job revolve around an “inside” setting. They, unfortunately, go through stressful and tiresome working conditions, which makes patience an essential virtue to the practice. It is needed for sticking to a complex theorem or for traveling frequently to world-spread observatories. They usually work eight to ten hours a day or fifty-six to seventy hours a week. A typical day…

When I was seven years old, I went on a field trip to the Jim Cherry Memorial planetarium in Atlanta, Georgia. The theme that day was travelling thru space, they enhanced the experience by making the sets moving. It was astonishing, how something so far away seems so contiguous. At that moment, I knew that I had to learn more. I went home that same day and ask my mom what all she knew about space, but she did not know very much. The following day, I started doing my research when I was capable of doing so. I remember wishing for some to tell me more. Since then, I always wonder what goes on in space while I am down here.…
