In the Iroquois Constitution, the Great Peace contained three main principles for their people: peace, power, and righteousness. These principles are similar to America’s rights for their people. In the Declaration of Independence, it states “All men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” (Jefferson 10). This quote is similar to Iroquois Constitution principles because they both include it in their constitution for their people and try to treat each other equally. Before the founding of America, the Natives in the Iroquois Constitution were a prime example of how to run a nation. They had a constitution that help maintain peace in their nation for their people, and people in their nation were respectful majority of the time. This is something that America wanted for their people. They wanted freedom and equality for their nation therefore, they would look at Iroquois constitution as an example of how to have that for their nation. In the Declaration of Independence, it states “We must therefore acquiesce in the necessity which denounces our separation and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind enemies in war, in peace friends” (Jefferson 13). This quote shows how they wanted to end their separation with the British and create peace between them and have peace in their nation. It also states “that as free independent states they have full power to levy war conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce and to do all other acts and thing which independent states may right do” (Jefferson 14). Peace was one of the main parts of what America wanted for themselves which is similar to Iroquois constitution. Having solitude in their nation would lead them into a successful union which is why the Iroquois Constitution had their constitution called the Great Peace showing how important
