Natural Way to Kill Mosquito
We would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to our teacher, Teacher Carmen Blanco, as well as our principal, Sister Rita Devasahayam who gave us the golden opportunity to do this wonderful project on the topic “Natural Insect Repellent” which also helped us in doing a lot of research and we came to know about so many new things. We are really thankful to them.

Secondly, we would also like to thank our parents and friends who helped us a lot in finishing this project within the limited time.

We are making this project not only for remarks but also to increase our knowledge. Thanks again to all who helped us.

Chapter 1

1. Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

For us, a house is a place of residence. It is usually a place in which an individual or a family can rest, store personal property, and prepare food. In able for the house to fulfill its function, we need to eliminate some factors that disturb us in doing these things. One example is the insect.

One of the easiest ways to prevent insects is to use insect repellant. This is the reason why we decide to make a liquid insect repellant for our Science Investigatory Project. There are many commercially available liquid insect repellant in the market. The commonly used commercial liquid insect repellant in the Philippines is quite unaffordable and uses chemicals that may cause irritation. We plan to use natural ingredients in our Science Investigatory Project. Since the ingredient to be used is natural, the liquid insect repellant to be made is more affordable and environment friendly.

2. Statement of the Problem

Is it possible to make an effective liquid repellant out of cacao leaves, garlic, vegetable oil, and eucalyptus oil? If it is possible, how is the price and effectiveness of it comparing to the commercially available

These chemicals are now universally used on almost every farm and in almost every home across this country. They are “nonselective chemicals that have the power to kill every insect, the 'good ' and the 'bad, ' to still the song of birds and the leaping of fish in the streams, to coat the leaves with a deadly film, and to linger on in the soil.” Sadly enough, the destination of these insecticides are usually only a few annoying bugs among the thousands that exist (Carson par. 7).…

An insecticide is a substance used by humans to gain some advantage in the struggle with various insects that are considered “pests”. In the sense used here, a pest insect is considered undesirable, from the human perspective, because: (a) it is a vector that transmits disease causing pathogens to humans (such as those causing malaria or yellow fever), or other diseases to livestock or crop plants; or (b) it causes a loss of the productivity or economic value of crop plants, domestic animals, or stored foodstuffs. The abundance and effects of almost all insect pests can be managed through the judicious use of insecticides.…

Our purpose of making this repellant is that insect will avoid destroying that object like plants, things, foods and such for it has a strong smell insects doesn’t like. And we make this repellant by boiling the two ingredients and after that, we combine it together with the rubbing alcohol. And, it is effective. We tested it in the two candies. One without the repellant and one with a repellant. We observe that ants avoided the candy with a repellant and they focus on the candy without a repellant. This repellant is really effective because of the lemongrass, garlic, ginger and alcohol.…

Nowadays one of our greatest problem especially farmers are pest specifically the insects. They cause us many troubles. Aside from they eat the plants from which we get our food for our survival they also make farmers work more difficult. Many farmers think that how they can prevent their crops from insects or some pest. Actually most of them use insecticide to protect their crops, but they didn’t know which kind of insecticides they will use. The researchers found out that there are different brand of insecticides that are expensive and can also destroy plant and humans health if they will use it. It is the reason why the researchers come up with their study that the tarragon plant can also be an insecticide and it is not harmful to the plants because it is come from organic material. The researcher found out that tarragon plant (Artemisia dracunculus) has the ability of it smell to prevent insects like aphids to destroy the plants or the crops and it has a component that has insecticidal effect such as estragole or methyl chavicol, cis and trans ocimene.…

According to the University of Minnesota 2004, Chemical Insecticides are a substance that destroys insects by chemical action. Some insecticides also destroy mites, ticks, and spiders. Because it kills, an insecticide differs from a repellent, such as DEET, citronella, or creosote, which merely keeps insects away. Insecticides are a form of pesticide; other pesticides include herbicides (weed killers) and fungicides (fungus killers). Many insecticides are poisonous to human beings. Labels on insecticide containers list special precautions for safe use. Fruits and vegetables that have been treated with insecticides always should be washed before they are eaten. Insecticides are also agents of chemical or biological origin that control insects. Control may result from killing the insect or otherwise preventing it from engaging in behaviors deemed destructive. Insecticides may be natural or manmade and are applied to target pests in a myriad of formulations and delivery systems (sprays, baits, slow-release diffusion, etc.) How about the Natural Insecticides? Insecticides have been used for centuries to fight unwanted pests. There are several natural (plant) insecticides that have been widely used, although compared with…

The researchers formulated a pesticide that was made up of Chili (Capsicum frutescens), Averrhoa bilimbi (Hedychium coronarium) and Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus Globus). Well eventually here in our country, many pests are everywhere like in drainages, manholes, old houses and streets. The researchers’ purposes for this project are to eliminate and control pests such as rats, cockroaches and mosquitoes. If these pests would grow and have a big amount of population, it can make everyone sick. The researchers’ pesticide is cheaper than the other commercial products and it is more effective. To create this kind of pesticide the researcher require to prepare: 1.) ½ kilo of Averrhoa bilimbi 2.) 1 ½ kilo of Chili 3.) Essence of Eucalyptus 4.) Blender 5.) Stove 6.) Strainer 7.) Empty bottle spray. First, we need to blend the Chili into the blender to cut it in pieces. After blending it, we will squeeze the Kamias fruit to get the extract of the fruit. Then, we will mix the Chili, Averrhoa bilimbi and Essence of Eucalyptus using the blender. After mixing, using the strainer, separate the juice. Then, boil the extract for 5 minutes. Then, put it in the empty spray bottle. During the procedure, you must wear gloves to avoid skin burning. Avoid having left out of the seeds of the chili because it might stick into the host of the bottle sprayer. The extract is like a chili sauce but it is not! The pesticide has a strong scent and it has a thick texture. Then we tried it in pests like cockroaches and rats. When we sprayed it in the rat, the rat has…
