Chapter 8 Case Study: Making Difficult Decisions at NBC Universal
The NBC Universal’s late night programming network where faced with some very tough decisions regarding Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien talk show host. I’m sure everyone is familiar with this dynamic duo, if not allow me to share a little history about these two gentleman. Jay Leno was born James Douglas Muir Leno on April 28, 1950, in New Rochelle, New York to father Angelo Leno and mother Cathryn Leno. Jay Leno is the late night talk show host and stand-up comedian who hosted The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 1992 to 2009. Conan O’Brien was born Conan Christopher O’Brien on April 18, 1963 in Brookline, Massachusetts to father Dr. Thomas O’Brien and mother Ruth Reardon O’Brien. Conan O’Brien started out as a TV writer before becoming a talk show host. Conon O’Brien now the new host the Tonight Show for the last 12yrs on NBC host by Jay Leno previously. NBC management decided to move Jay Leno to prime-time slot while elevating Conan O’Brien to the new host of “The Tonight Show” then NBC decided to reverse their decision. NBC became concerned that O’Brien might move to another network, so they decided to make him a promise in 2009 that he would succeed Jay Leno as the host of “The Tonight Show”. NBC was betting by this time Jay Leno would be ready to retire. Unfortunately in 2009 Jay Leno announced he has no intentions on retiring as host of “The Tonight Show”. The plot now thicken as NBC and CEO Jeff Zucker look for solutions to keep Jay Leno on the air. The network came up with “The Jay Leno Show” while moving Conan into the Tonight Show seat. NBC was feeling pretty good about saving the network money and the decision to keep both late night talk show host’s.

Major League Baseball has been an industry leader in the digital space for athletic entertainment, thanks to the launch of Baseball Advanced Media (BAM) in 2009. Once the organization took off and grew, it began branching out and offering its content in a variety of channels and platforms. Careful consideration had been given on each of these platforms, but the organization considered itself to be a risk-taker and a first-mover for its industry. Now, with the launch of Apple’s iPad in 2010, BAM was faced with different and complex issues concerning a BAM application for the device. Would they invest the resources to create an app? Would this app be different from existing apps, such as At Bat for the iPhone and iPod touch? How does this addition improve the portfolio of offerings, and does this cannibalize other sources of revenue for BAM?…

Viewers decide what to watch based on personal opinions, it is also the matter of fact if these points of views are validated because people are biased. In the video Are You A Biased TV Viewer, Bernie Goldberg emphasizes that more and more tv viewers are only listening to new sources that consider and validate some of these specific points the spectators stand for. Viewers will choose sides on either liberal or conservative, but only a few will be in between actually listening to a couple of sources to choose an unprejudiced viewpoint. Someone will not agree to watch something that contradicts opinions that some consider to be honest and precise. People will not watch something that will disagree and second guess opinions being stood for. These…

It comes as no surprise to anyone that teenagers are sometimes naturally moody, angst-ridden, and emotional as they transition from childhood to adulthood. No one, that is, but teenagers. For adolescents such as myself, the shifting position that teenagers come to in these years is awkward at best, and painful at worst. The sudden responsibility and pressure thrust upon a teenager in the latter years of high school (and often before) is near impossible to easily adjust to, especially when there is no real preparation offered. When left at the confusing crossroads of a seemingly transitory crisis, teenagers are faced with serious internal and external conflicts, often manifest in manic-depressive and abusive tendencies, as displayed in Salinger’s…

    1. BSB should have been able to identify potential competitors, particularly News Corporation. News Corporation was successful in US (in the US TV satellite industry), had experience transmitting television programs to Western Europe with a low-powered satellite and they already had presence in the UK with newspapers, which could allowed Sky to realize economies of scope. These economies of scope are even more significant if we take into account that News Corporation owns 20th Century Fox Studios. After purchasing 69% interests in SATV and renaming it to Sky Channel, this was a clear signal of a potential competitor to BSB. Adding to this, other signal was Murdoch’s personality, characterized by being aggressive and used to risk and make big bets. After all, he had bid against BSB to the British DBS franchise and lost, and given his personality, it’s normal that he would not go away after the first round. News Corporation is a global company and UK is one of the wealthier nations in the world, with high potential advertising revenue, which would make Murdoch want to be the leading player.…

The first thing I notice when I open the website are the scores to the MLB games. I decided to visit ESPN because that is the sport media website I visit the most. ESPN changes their main focus depending on the date. For example, during different sport seasons there will be different headlines. The NFL goes from Septemeber to January(sometimes February). However, it is not always NFL during those months. Football is played on Thursday, Sunday, and Monday. Occasionally there will be a major event that is somewhat football related on a different day of the week but generally the NFL is only the main focus on Thursday, Sunday, and Monday.…

The thesis is an essay about the difference between NBA media contrasting from the past to the present on national television. In Particular this thesis analyses the implementation of television broadcast of the NBA and how coverage changed the game. The games themselves were broken down into four segments: pregame, halftime, postgame, and game coverage. The pregame show was further sectioned into four areas: the opening part of the broadcast, which in broadcasting terminology is known as a tease, introduction of announcers, and team line-ups/injury reports. The content of the pregame shows was also analysed. It was determined that pregame coverage has developed a more modern sophisticated approach since the 1980s, with more elaborate teases…

I have realized recently that friends should not have any affect at all on the decisions you make in life. It does not matter whether you are a middle school student, high school student, college student, or even a grown and mature adult. Making a wrong decision at the wrong time can have many negative affects on life, I know because I've been there. A wrong decision might only affect you temporarily or it could stay with you for the rest of your life. It could cost you a job or could keep you from getting into the college you dreamed of going to your whole life. The bad decisions are too much to risk.…
