By: Ariana Neon was discovered by Morris Traver, and William Ramsay in 1898. Neon is a gas that produces a colored glow when excited by electricity passing through a glass tube in which the glass is confined. But you may wonder how are these neon lights even made? Well, the Neons gas is inserted into glass tubing using a thin pipe then the pipe is quickly removed, and the glass is fused at the end. The neon tube produces the light when an electrical current bombards the gas atoms with electrons knocking neon atoms out of orbit. As a result, Electrons collide with other electrons thus causing light. Neon is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless gas. It’s symbol is Ne, and it’s atomic number is 10 on the periodic table. The atomic mass of neon is 20.179. But wait! There’s more. You may be wondering is neon in the air? Well, neon is in the air, naturally too. You also may be asking yourself then where does neon come from? Neon is in the atmosphere like I said before. But not only in the atmosphere. Neon is also in outer …show more content…
Or that neon is the second lightest inert gas, as well as being the second lightest noble gas after helium. Helium is the chemical element of atomic number 2, an inert gas that is the lightest member of the noble gases. Knowing this about helium can change your ways of seeing neon. To freshen up your memory about neon the definition of neon is the chemical element of atomic number 10, an inert gaseous element of the noble gas group. So far you have learned about neon, and how it works. You have discovered how neon signs are made step by step. You have also learned a little bit about helium along the way of this neon path you are taking. But what you have read in not all words have to say about neon. There is facts about neon you still do not know. These may include anything from what do people do with neon other than use it for neon lights to how can I make my own neon sign at
