Netball is a game made up of throwing, catching, running and jumping. Most people can mistake Netball for Basketball but here are the differences between both sports:
In Basketball, the player who has the ball can move around with the ball freely as opposed to Netball players who once have the ball, cannot run or move with the ball, they are only allowed to step forward with one foot, and throw the ball.
In Basketball, the player must always dribble the ball in order to move around with it, but in Netball the player must always pass it immediately to the player close to them.
Basic rules of Netball:
The game first starts when the umpire blows the whistle, the centre starts off with the ball and they will pass it to one of their team mates. Once a goal is scored, that process will repeat. A whole game lasts about 40 minutes.
Players cannot deliberately come into contact with other players, shoving, bumping into, tripping etc. is not acceptable.
A player cannot come within 3ft of the person who has the ball or else it’s called contact or obstruction.
A player must pass or shoot a goal within 3 seconds of receiving the ball.
Players must stay within their designated areas or else it will be a free pass awarded to the opposing team, if players go outside their boundaries, then it is called ‘Offside’.
Players cannot run with the ball or dribble it, they must catch it and not pick up their grounded foot, unless they pick it up and do not put it back down or else it’s called stepping.
If any of these rules are disobeyed, there are 5 types of penalties for them.
a) Free pass
b) Penalty pass
c) Penalty pass or shot
d) Throw in
e) Toss up
GS – This is the goal shooter, they throw the ball in the hoop and get goals. They’re allowed to go in the Goal Third and in the semicircle.
