I was amazed by the existence of such field, and I found myself continually reading books and researches about brain disorders’ effects. Therefore, …show more content…
Neuropsychology became my passion in a short period of time. I’ve decided that I want to become a Neuropsychologist who will conduct challenging researches that will change the general perception of the human brain in the future. I dedicated myself to this goal, and spent the senior year of my high school finding alternative roads that would lead me to it. Though, there was one big problem who was standing between me and my goal: I am from a developing country who cares little about mental health problems, let alone recognizing a specialized field like Neuropsychology. I knew that if I stay in my country -Turkey, I would have no chance of accomplishing my goals. Staying in Turkey would be accepting an ordinary life, but I didn't want ordinary.
Furthermore, I’ve decided to move into the United States.
I could not speak more than a few words of English, but my dedication was enough to overcome my weaknesses. I’ve started my education in the Northern Virginia Community College, which is a two year institution that offers a wide variety of majors. I improved my English by dedicating most of my time to studying. I was also eager to participate in psychology-related organizations but I was not able to find any available opportunities on my campus. Consequently, I started a psychology club named “Psi Revolutio” to increase awareness about mental illnesses and psychological conditions that are highly influential within Northern Virginia Community. As the founder and the president, I was able to address many important issues that affect college students, such as neurotransmitters and their correlational relationship with drug abuse, during our weekly
discussions.
Likewise, I’ve became an active member and the secretary of Phi Theta Kappa, Tau Nu Chapter. Indeed, I fulfilled the basic responsibilities of being a secretary like documenting meetings, providing a healthy connection between chapter members, advertising the honor society to recruit new members. Yet, my contribution was not limited to these. NVCC has one the lowest rates of graduation among community colleges. Therefore, I played a major role with the organization of a C4 Event that aimed to encourage CC students to complete their education. I also did many fundraising activities, and raised approx. $400 dollars for this cause.
Even though NVCC was a good college for me to sprout, its benefits did not satisfy my hunger of advanced science courses in the long term. I soon will be graduating with my associate’s degree in psychology. I’ve took huge a step on the road of education with my A.S. degree, but I am also aware of the fact that this road is long and requires me to be fully dedicated to accomplishing things. Therefore, I want to transfer to a 4-year institution who will provide me the resources that my forthcoming education require. I hope, transferring to a 4-year institution will give me this opportunity, and help me accomplish my goal that brought me here from Turkey.
