Association took many steps that in the moment did not work to their full advantage, however, in the end, the many steps they took resulted in an outcome that was to their benefit, and caused them to succeed in their goals (“Love Canal”).
Nevertheless, the Love Canal Homeowners Association could have taken different actions in a more efficient way to accomplish the set goals they had.
First, they could have been more organized. With an organization that is just beginning, the leadership and goals can get lost in the grand scheme of things. Nonprofits should have an organizational way to accomplish their goals to help their goals succeed and in an effective and efficient way. Secondly, organizations working towards environmental agendas should find a way to have an expert join in on the political battle. When organizations have experts on their side, they almost have a leg up on the government. If these organizations have tests done (which this could possibly cause an issue, because of limited amount of funds), they will be able to submit official documents to the government to show their research. Lastly, media relations are a large part of political battles. If nonprofit organizations want to have other people hear their story, they need to go to the media and show the country first hand what they are dealing with. With this, the nonprofits will “kill two birds with one stone”: first they would be getting the word out to others in the country and secondly, they would be getting the government’s attention with the news but out by the media. The Love Canal Homeowners Association did have the media help them, however, there should have been more communication with the
media.
Nonprofits always have room to better and improve the organization, however, if they succeed with their goals, they are already succeeding. The Love Canal Homeowners Association had a rocky start, but in the end, they were able to come together and get the government’s attention. The organization was able to get everyone in the community relocated and on top of it all, even close down the school (“Love Canal”). Without the Love Canal Homeowners Association, there could have been many more illnesses and deaths, and the Center for Health, Environment, and Justice may not exist today.
