Abstract
This research paper will cover the effects that defunding planned parenthood would have on our health care system and how it would affect the care of women in the United States. It will cover the history of Planned Parenthood and how it contributes to the healthcare system (how many women they really help) and will also cover the amount of help planned parenthood gets from the government. It will then go into detail as to how defunding Planned Parenthood would affect millions of women in our country and the cons of defunding such a large nonprofit organization. It began in Mexico City with the “Gag Rule.” The Gag Rule,
Stipulates that non governmental organizations receiving U.S. assistance cannot use separately obtained non-U.S. funds to inform the public or educate their government on the need to make safe abortion available, provide legal abortion services, or provide advice on where to get an abortion. (Change Center, 2016).
Enforcement of this rule drastically diminished women’s abilities to obtain the health care they needed. In a study done by Population Action International found some interesting data from their research such as:
Enforcement of the gag rule drastically curtailed community-based outreach activities, a major means for getting information and services to people in these areas. In addition, the flow and availability of contraceptive supplies were seriously impeded, and related reproductive health care such as postabortion care and screening for cervical cancers and STIs including HIV were also dramatically diminished as FPAK and MSI Kenya had to retrench.
