Abstract

This research paper will cover the effects that defunding planned parenthood would have on our health care system and how it would affect the care of women in the United States. It will cover the history of Planned Parenthood and how it contributes to the healthcare system (how many women they really help) and will also cover the amount of help planned parenthood gets from the government. It will then go into detail as to how defunding Planned Parenthood would affect millions of women in our country and the cons of defunding such a large nonprofit organization. It began in Mexico City with the “Gag Rule.” The Gag Rule,

Stipulates that non governmental organizations receiving U.S. assistance cannot use separately obtained non-U.S. funds to inform the public or educate their government on the need to make safe abortion available, provide legal abortion services, or provide advice on where to get an abortion. (Change Center, 2016).

Enforcement of this rule drastically diminished women’s abilities to obtain the health care they needed. In a study done by Population Action International found some interesting data from their research such as:

Enforcement of the gag rule drastically curtailed community-based outreach activities, a major means for getting information and services to people in these areas. In addition, the flow and availability of contraceptive supplies were seriously impeded, and related reproductive health care such as postabortion care and screening for cervical cancers and STIs including HIV were also dramatically diminished as FPAK and MSI Kenya had to retrench. Government clinics, exempt from the gag rule, were never able to pick up the slack nor regain the trust of women who had been turned away by the NGOs (Cohen, 2015, …show more content…

    Today, the availability of birth control is taken for granted. There was a time, not long passed, during which the subject was illegal (“Margaret Sanger,” 2013, p.1). That did not stop the resilient leader of the birth control movement. Margaret Sanger was a nurse and women’s activist. While working as a nurse, Sanger treated many women who had suffered from unsafe abortions or tried to self-induce abortion (p.1). Seeing this devastation and noting that it was mainly low income women suffering from these problems, she was inspired to dedicate her life to educating women on family planning—even though the discussion of which was highly illegal at the time (p.1). She was often in trouble with the law and had to flee the country on more than one occasion (p.2). However, Sanger never gave up on her quest to empower women with the right to choose motherhood.     Planned Parenthood itself isn’t necessarily the problem, but the people that oppose it. Christian Policy Analysist, Sarah Torre, has many things to say on the issue of Planned Parenthood, although she doesn’t necessarily try to see it from a side other than hers. While reflecting upon rumors about Planned Parenthood selling tissue and body parts of unborn babies, Torre presents that government funding needs to be cut entirely from the organization. She supports her argument by making claims such as Planned Parenthood has enough money, and that there are enough other places for women to get the care and services provided there. Being the leading abortion provider in the US is the authors top reason, however, for prompting her “defund Planned Parenthood” campaign, even though abortions only make up about 3% of all services provided. She claims it is immoral for taxpayers, especially those who are against abortion, to be required to pay for an affiliation that provides the very thing they are so much against. The fact seems to be forgotten that although not everybody believes that healthcare, such as programs provided by the Affordable Care Act, are not approved or liked by everyone. Even so, everybody has to pay taxes that fund these programs, and really how is it different from taxpayers money going to Planned Parenthood?
