Currently, abortions are not publicly funded, and it is illegal for Planned Parenthood to use federal money for an abortion. This means that this law is not meant for tax payer’s money to stop paying money for abortions, it means that this bill is a way for some people to indirectly stop women from being able to have the option of choosing. This shortsighted action is not only goes against the intentions of the laws passed to give women the right to chose what they can do with their bodies, but will greatly affect the other services that Planned Parenthood provide.
Only a very low percentage of Planned Parenthood”s services were for abortions. The vast are in preventative care like contraception and …show more content…
STD testing and treatment. If Planned Parenthood is defunded, it has the potential to become a public health issue. There is sound reasoning to expect an increase in unplanned pregnancies and disease transmission. I find this to be the most concerning aspect because a person’s well-being is all some people have and can use to make their lives better.
Defunding Planned Parent could also potentially be more expensive due to the likely spike in unplanned pregnancies. Instead of paying for the cheaper preventative care that Planned Parenthood provides, an unplanned child can cost the government a lot as well as diseases.
The worst part of all the problems that it will cause is that the people who will be most affected by this are the low-income citizens using the programs and not the people making the decisions.
Defunding Planned Parenthood would result in certain women in low-income areas to not have access to services because Planned Parenthood is the only provider available to them. The promise of being taken care of by other health care providers is also inconsiderate to the low-income demographic because the transition will likely take time due to the high amount of people that rely on Planned Parenthood. It will be difficult to receive services when needed. As Michael Schwalbe points out, just because we don't regularly see the inequality that we systems we put in place cause does not mean that they are not
there.
By disregarding the people it will affect the most, the “Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2017” will perpetuate inequality and the problems that people face. This form of inequality is especially harsh because it affects people’s health.
