Northeastern Tidal Beetles Reflection
I truly enjoyed my trip to the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, I enjoyed exploring the Java History trail, and I thought the Mathias laboratory was quite high-tech. The most interesting discovery was what I learned about the Northeastern Tidal Beetles, it’s astonishing how heavily they were impacted in such a short amount of time. I enjoyed putting what I’ve learned so far in the course into practice. The chapter on tides and waves has been my favorite chapter so far, I was pleased I could see it in action while observing the river. I was quite disappointed I couldn’t capture the garbage or boats I found in the river, they were too far to get a clear picture. Also, I wish I would’ve found more organisms but they didn’t seem to be

A two-part study was recently done to show what natural habitat a Pill bug, Armadillidium vulgare, naturally prefers: wet or dry environments along with a light or dark environment. It was hypothesized that a Pill bug would prefer and wet and dark environment based on its natural habitat of soil. For the wet and dry experiment, a coffee filter and soil were placed in each chamber of a double petri dish with one being dampened before being placed in. For the light and dry experiment a light was hung above one chamber of another double-chambered petri dish while the other chamber was covered with aluminum foil, after placing soil in both chambers. An equal number of Pill bugs was placed in each chamber and a study was taken for ten minutes where every thirty seconds the number of Pill bugs in each dish was counted. The results showed that Pill bugs, unlike it’s natural habitats, preferred light and dry environments.…

I would recommend Dr. Gothamie Weerakoon for future classes. She is a very inspirational person who has done interesting research on an organism most people never heard of. She mentioned the importance of protecting rainforest and how global warming is real issue. She was funny and did an excellent job teaching the class about lichen and her other research. With a lifespan of 969 years, his family is also mentioned as inheriting his traits of longevity, with his descendants mostly living for 800 to 900 years. The short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, written by James Hurst, takes place in the south during WWI. This fictional story tells the story of a narrator who is ashamed of his younger brother. Doodle, the little brother, was born with a body incapable of doing normal everyday things. Big brother did not like that Doodle was different so he pushed him to learn how to swim, walk and try and do other normal things. Throughout the story, Big brother pushes Doodle to the limits, and ends with a horrid conflict. To conclude, big brother is very cruel to Doodle because he knows the health risks, he is embarrassed by something he can not help, and he forces him to do things he does not want to do.…

The simulated Constitution Convention that we held in class today was very eye-opening. Reading about the events that took place that day in Philadelphia, and actually participating in the tedious act certainly put things into perspective. It was interesting to take the concerns of the colonists in 1787 and fight for them as they did 230 years ago. By conducting this experiment, we got the chance to put ourselves in the delegates shoes and voice our apprehensions and get a sense of the hardships they had to face in that Pennsylvania State House the hot summer of 1787. Anyone can research the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention, but by reenacting, and actually revising our own Convention in class, we got a real appreciation of what occurred…

The variety of GHP has drawn my attention greatly. When a former GHP student, Paul, talked about his experience it made me want to go more. He also spoke of the importance of ultimate Frisbee at GHP I remember how much Dammy played ultimate Frisbee when he came back home. Paul talked about the project he did for his major about plants and how to use the energy and the session he went to on how to make a wand. During the video that was shown at the meeting, the different types of people and their majors amazed me. The enormity of the campus, the many people to meet, and the many things to be done there were amazing.…

During my early years in Muskoka I was always encouraged to take a strong interest in the sciences, arts, and the natural world. I not only learned about my environment from living on the “land” but I also spent a substantial part of my life living on a boat on the “water”. Living aboard and sailing on the water, I found, was actually one of the best classrooms I could have experienced. It truly teaches one to see and view all your everyday experiences from a whole different perspective. It taught me the value of being completely self-sufficient, and required me to rely on my own decision making abilities. It also taught me to live with total respect for the living environment and wildlife around me on both a local and global level. I have learned how fragile and threatened our environment has become. I came to realize that our lives are connected, in every way, to all the elements that make up our planet.…
