Notes - Information Systems
Overview of Computer Based Information Systems –
Information technology relates to any computer based tool that people use to work with information and to support the information and information processing needs of an organization
Information system collects, processes, stores, analyzes and disseminates information for a specific purpose
Two closely related terms - Data and knowledge
1) Data items – elementary description of things, events, activities and transactions that are recorded, classified and stored… data items can be numbers, letters, figures, sounds and images
Ex. 3, 11, A, B C)
2) Knowledge – consists of data and/or information that have been organized and processed to convey understanding, experience, accumulated learning and expertise as they apply to a current business problem.
Both these produce the information to take action -
Information: data that have been organized so that they have meaning and value to the recipient. Ex. Grade point average (GPA) is data, but a student’s name coupled with his or her GPA is information.
Computer-based information system (CBIS): is an information system that uses computer technology to perform some or all of its intended tasks.
The first four are called “information technology components”. these four components interact to form a CBIS.
1) Hardware – consists of devices such as the processor, monitor, keyboard, and printer. Together, these devices accept, process, and display data and information.
2) Software - is a program or collection of programs that enable the hardware to process data.
3) Database - is a collection of related files or tables containing data.
4) Network - is a connecting system (wireline or wireless) that permits different computers to share resources.
Procedures – are the instructions for combining the above components in order to process information and generate the desired output
“People” are those individuals who use the hardware and software, interface with it, or

In today’s world the use of information systems and software applications are critical to the workplace. “Information systems (IS) collects, processes, stores, analyzes, and disseminates information for a specific purpose” (Rainer & Turban, 2008). “Information systems refers to technology designed to handle the data that institutions receive, process, generate, save, backup, disseminate, and use to make decisions” (Smith, 2007). IS do not have to be used with computers, but with today’s technology, most IS are associated with them. Computer-based information systems (CBIS) are made up of a few components including hardware, software and people, just to name a few. Software applications are “a set of computer instructions that provide more specific functionality to a user” (Rainer & Turban, 2008). An example of a software application is Microsoft Word, the popular word processing application that is standard on most computers. Software applications exist to make work easier for computer users. The same can be said for information systems, both IS and software applications are very helpful in the workplace for different departments such as human resources, accounting and marketing.…
